defense to the Thai clinch?

I've noticed recently that the Thai clinch when used by people like Pele and Vanderlei Silva is brutal and almost unstopable. What is the defense to the Thai clinch in MMA and in Muay Thai?

to some dgree it is unstopble indeed.i remember training in thailand where 15 year olds would through my ass around like a doll when i outwighted them by 30 pounds. the clinch is the by far the most tecnical aspect of muay thai.

i guess you just have to get better at the clinch and understand how it works better. try working on your clinch with as many people as you can for at least 15 minutes each time. dont be tense while clinching and just knee with the inside of your thigh, this way you will avoide injery and work your technic. make sure you never have a foot inbtween your opponents legs, this way it will be much easier to through you.
keepyour upper body at ease and make sure you dont give out your neck.keep you shoulders high and be on your toes alot. play around when clinching, dont get over serious or competitive.its all about balance and timing in the clinch, otherwise 15 years old wouldnt be able to through me around like they did.

zealot and ryukyu have combined the correct...

Many defences:

Swim your hands to the inside and take the head control and throw your own knees.

Drop your weight and take a double underhook grip to the lower back.

Palms under the chin and push up and off.

Downward spike elbow to the kneck / shoulder.

Palms under the other guys elbows and lift off.

the biggest problem is the mma fighters (not all) put such a HUGE space between them in the clinch which has them eating knees like cereal.

Best defense is to get your body in close to theirs so they don't have room for knees and don't have as much leverage to keep you down and whip you around.

Get control of their hips and take them down.

The other defenses listed above, and in the archives that Khun Kao already posted are very good oens.

My favorite: get my hips in close by bending my knees, effectively gluing my toros to theirs so they don't have room for knees and can't whip me aruond effectively. Throw my right hand over the top into their face, then drop it straight down and swim it under their left triceps. shoot my left hand up into my right hand and pushing my right elbow down while explosively straightening my knees (I've actually left the ground before), this pushes their left arm down and traps it into my ribs, while getting my head to the outside of their grip and opens up their ribs for some curve knees.

Cockney's tips are good, when you have a serious size difference in your favour, there is something to be said for challenging his hold on you by just stepping forward and throwing your weight upwards as well, then if you break it just touch off and come back with a couple nice cut kicks before you throw him in a clinch as well.

Greco-Roman Wrestling techniques, see Randys tape series. There are quite a few good techniques that can be used in Thai-Boxing, Actually the Thais use alot of them anyway.

Which tape of Randy's deals with it? I have the clinch tape but for some reason I do remember this being on there.

Also, what about either a shuck or arm drag as a counter?

Erik Paulson has a clinch tape that deals with this extensively, called "The Plumb", I believe? Good stuff.

short hooks to the chin.

...see kraus vs. ludwig

thanks

ok why the fuck is the thai clinch so hard to stop and why does Rampage still seem unable to stop it? Fucking hell someone get boy some help!!!

Maybe because Chute bBox trains to strike from the plumb clinch more than Quinton has trained to defend from it.

Jackson looks passive in the clinch, just defending... that is a formular to get f-ed up... need to be active in there, generally speaking, it is EASIER to defend it in MMA than in strict THai rules, because you can use more wrestling and takedowns...

"Maybe because Chute bBox trains to strike from the plumb clinch more than Quinton has trained to defend from it."

Not taking any credit away from Chute Box, but you would think that after two fights with Silva this should still be the case? If so that doesnt say much for Rampage as a fighter or his discursive ability. Also, where does Colin Oyama factor in all this? Its not like Rampage isnt already working with a muay thai trainer...

best defence... work with some highschool wrestlers or judo fighters. I use to school people that were bad ass clinchers and knee fighters by tossing them or just plain slamming them when they tied me up. everything I learned by wrestling in highschool managed to work its way into every muay thai fight.

Da Swede could you discribe it. Would like to try it out play around with it.

Much appreciated bro

Hey De Swede, thats called a pinch headlock in wrestling, the Thai's love it as well. Buakaw uses it really really well. Its good to stop takedowns.

Would you be kind enough to share some of the entries into clinch he showed, because we havent been lucky enough to get him into australia yet!!!

Thanks in advance man.

Mad bro, thanks for taking the time to answer, sounds like a kewl seminar.
