t's like déjà vu all over again for top UFC lightweight Rory MacDonald.

In October, MacDonald beat the consciousness out of Tarrec Saffiedine, and was slated to fight the winner of UFC middleweight champion Robbie Lawler vs. former champ Johny Hendricks in December.

However, Hendricks vs. Lawler II was so close that the power that be determined that trilogy fight makes sense. Further influencing the decision, Lawler beat MacDonald late in 2013, albeit by split decision.

So now, again, MacDonald gets the winner of Lawler vs. Hendricks.

“Yah it’s tough," said UFC president Dana White on UFC Tonight this week." You say a guy is next in line, but you don't know how that fight's going to turn out. And when you have a war like you had with those first two fights - Johny wins the first one, Robbie wins the second one - a trilogy makes sense. It's not that Rory isn't next in line, he is. But now he's just next in line behind this fight."

It is not known as yet when Lawler vs. Hendricks 3 will be, or if MacDonald will be taking a fight before the oft promised title shot.

This.

Just get rid of the bs ranking system then

As deserving as MacDonald is of finally getting his title shot, and as much as I generally dislike rematches, both the Hendricks/Lawler fights have been exciting and grueling fights. I was shocked when Lawler was announced the winner, and personally thought the first fight was closer. Not a Hendricks fan, but I definitely think he was robbed and a trilogy fight is the surest way to settle things. MacDonald vs Lombard would be a sick fight to determine #1 contender, although I wouldn't blame Rory for sitting out and waiting for his shot if the UFC allowed it.

Nailed it.

I'm definitely a Rory MacDonald fan. I get the rematch, but am really looking forward to seeing Rory fight for the title. Lombard is a beast - will be interesting to see if that fight happens. Rory will likely take it - his attitude is that he has to fight everybody eventually as champ, why wait? Phone Post 3.0

I think there should always be a fight in between championship rematches unless the original fight ends in controversy.

Should've gone down like this:

Lawler v Hendricks - Hendricks wins

Hendricks/MacDonald winner vs Robbie.

Possibly 3 unique matches instead of a trilogy.

yeah Im not a big fan of immediate rematches unless it's a a weird ending.

IMO Hendricks should have to fight a contender before rematch just like Lawler did. I know Lawler took another fight because of Hendricks being injured, but still think Hendricks or anyone for that matter should fight someone else first.

God knows why they want Hendricks to be champion so much, he absolutely sucks. I've come around since listening to the JRE with Rory on it and he seems like a cool kid (still a little weird) but this is bullshit for him and I really really don't understand. Phone Post 3.0

And really fucking annoying. Phone Post 3.0

If he had used the same logic for Lawler, and not having to fight his way back to the top, it would make sense. But he uses different logic when it comes to Hendricks, and Rory McDonald is collateral damage.

Dana is in full spinning mode lately, it's nauseating.

"a trilogy makes sense"

I can get behind that, but an immediate rematch doesn't make sense and ties up yet another weight class with 2 guys out of ~100 fighting for the title over and over while the rest of the division stagnates in a holding pattern.

I said it in another thread and I'll say it again. The UFC is adding more and more fighters to each division, but at the same time less and less of them are actually competing for the title. It's fucking bullshit.

Best part is (as he talks about how January fights will lead into bigger fights later in the year): "Ronda Rousey is fighting Cat Zingano, and she wants to fight again in July".

Stopped reading after top UFC lightweight. Phone Post 3.0

Rory should get the title shot. He bores me for the most part but he's earned it. Not to mention you can build more buzz for a rematch after a few more fights not right away.

There should not be a rematch right now. It would have been okay later down the road.

But if the UFC has decided it is happening next do it quick, GET IT OVER WITH ASAP.

I dont care about this fight at all.

Dana says it makes sense because they have fought in two wars. LOL.

The last fight was ridiculous. Hendricks tucking his head in between Robbie's legs and holding on. It was far from a war. Maybe he was only giving 70 percent.
