Dominick Cruz hasn't fought since losing his bantamweight championship to Cody Garbrandt in 2016, but on Saturday night in the co-main event of UFC 249, Cruz challenges new division champion Henry Cejudo.
UFC president Dana White spoke recently with BT Sport and said a Cruz win would be among the greatest upsets in league history. The consensus choice for the honor is Matt Serra over GSP at UFC 69 in 2007.
“100 percent. I think it’s the biggest upset ever," said White, as transcribed by Adam Martin for BJPenn.com. "Say what you want about Henry Cejudo, you don’t like his personality, the guy is unbelievable and he’s looked incredible in his last several outings. He is the man right now ... two different weight >
“Dominick Cruz is the unluckiest fighter of all time. I mean the injuries that this guy’s had. If he can pull this off, it’s one of the biggest upsets. I’d put it right up there with Matt Serra vs. Georges St-Pierre.”
How does he equate the best (but most boring) 135er ever winning after a long lay off to the craziest upset of a former UFC 155 guy having to go through TUF to just to get a shot at beating the best 170er ever.
Cruz has been a champion for most of his career. One of the greatest ever coming back and still being great isn’t the largest upset ever. Serra shocked the world, but Cruz winning wouldn’t shock me.
so he’s selling us a bullshit fight? Cruz is “so bad”, why are you making us pay for pure crap? Egg is saying the ufc puts on joke fights to get your money!
I don’t get why he says shit like that. Anyone who has any knowledge of mma history knows it’s gonna be a great fight. Henry will be the bull and Dom will be the matador. We get it. No need to hype it up with boolsheet.
