UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez is the baddest man on the planet, and he has not fought since October of 2013, due to a series of injuries. A frustrated UFC president Dana White recently placed the blame on training practices at AKA.

AKA founder and head coach Javier Mendez was not offended, but said he would take the criticism as a opportunity to improve.

"I love the fact that he's bringing attention to that and it does help me look to ways to improve," said the coach. "I've been looking to improve the injury rate, and it does concern me."

Now with the AKA's Khabib Nurmagomedov out with a knee injury, in an interview wit La Aficion, White called for further steps to be taken to reduce injuries, and revealed that the new ZUFFA headquarters will have a large rehabilitation facility.

"The conversation that I was having with Javier Mendez, is we've got to start training these guys different in the gym," said White. "These guy have to start having a lot less contact when it comes to sparring.

"The NFL has proven it. They've done these studies. The NFL isn't hitting every day like they used to. They're playing on Sunday man - that's it. You have to have some sparring in there, but these guys are doing way too much damage to their fighters inside the gym.

"The response from the trainers has been good. Listen, Javier Mendes said 'If Cain isn't fighting, nobody is getting paid. I'm not getting paid, Cain's not getting paid The UFC isn't making money to pay Cain. So it's not good for anyone.'

"So it's awesome that a guy like Javier gets it. There's no ego involved. He wants to do what's right by his fighters."

"Injuries are going to happen. You're going to have injuries. But you have to be so careful. The question becomes with Khabib, did he do all his therapy that he was supposed to do, on his knee, after his surgery? Did he do all the right things? We're starting to get our ducks in a row, and we're going to start fixing this."

"We break ground in June in a new office building here, and we are going to built a huge rehab center for the fighters. Because here's what doesn't happen in football - if DeMarco Murray blows his knee out for the Dallas Cowboys, they don't just send him home and say 'Hey, good luck, call us when you're healthy.' They make sure he's there doing his therapy, his rehab, and everything else. That's what we're going to start doing too with our fighters."

"There's no doubt about it - AKA is one of the biggest and one of the best. I call camps like his and Greg Jackson's, 'super camps.' They have all the best guys in the world. That's what I'm saying. You can't have all the best guys in the world beating the living s--- out of each other every day. You can't do it. These guys have to have camps built around them, where guys are working with them, not trying to hurt them."

That was a fairly reasoned statement from Blaf. He's right. Phone Post 3.0

so basically, do what muay thai in thailand has been doing for decades?

yusul - so basically, do what muay thai in thailand has been doing for decades?
Completely different. You're talking about guys who have fought full Thai rules since 9 or so. They fight every three weeks or thereabouts. Combined they'll end up with around 500 amateur and professional bouts and retire in their mid 20s. Not to mention they usually get the shit beaten out of them as kids by the adults. Phone Post 3.0

Dana is completely right on this one.

that's true, but the training itself is not balls to the wall everyday before a fight.

The DeMarco Murray analogy does NOT apply.

Murray is a Dallas Cowboy.

UFC fighters are INDEPENDENT CONTRACTORS.

They are ONLY contracted for a specific fight with agreed upon terms.

A Dallas Cowboy player is under contract for a period of time that includes games and all such activities as related to being a Cowboy.

If a fighter has no fight scheduled?

He. Isn't. Getting. Paid.

UFC isn't paying guys for not fighting.

Murray is paid for a season/year and not just on Sunday's.

So this doesn't work unless DFW will start paying guys a salary and/or removes independent contractor status.

If you run a Subway. The guys making sandwiches are employees.

If your pipes burst you contract a plumber who arrives and has no vested interest or responsibility beyond fixing the pipes as per what he's contracted for.

Fighters are not employees but independent contractors so, yeah, you can't make guys come there to rehab if they don't have a fight booked.

You also can't make guys see a UFC doctor when a fight isn't scheduled as again it's a different relationship altogether. Phone Post 3.0

I think you missed the point by about a mile. It sounds to me like having access to a top notch facility with doctors specifically trained to help fighters in their recovery is a good thing. I think you're reading too much into him saying they're going to make sure they're doing their rehab.

Is the UFC hate on this board really so bad that building a facility to aid in fighter rehab is a bad thing?

Wow, a perfectly reasonable, measured response by Dana that I toally agree with... How about that...

The problem is getting the fighters to push themselves as hard in all their training as they do in sparring. Phone Post

Exactly this. This sport is fucked up, entertaining but completely fucked.

A UFC event where every fight ended up with a viscious traumatic brain injuring Knock Out would be considered a huge success to Blaf, most fans, and everyone else getting paid from the event (minus the victims).

I don't see him blaming injuries for lack of action, KOs or anything of the sort; he just wants his champs (and all of his fighters) to be able to fight. Perfectly reasonable IMO, IF they're really pushing it.

Wrestlers don't go live 100% in training very frequently, either. For that exact reason. Phone Post 3.0
