On Aug 4, UFC light heavyweight Jon Jones and challenger Daniel Cormier famously got into a brawl at a UFC 178 media event.

Stuck between two of the baddest men on the planet was UFC Senior Director of Public Relations Dave Sholler, who few would describe as one of the baddest men on the planet.

Some fans speculated that had UFC president Dana White been present (he was on a rare vacation in Bora Bora at the time) the brawl might not have happened. On UFC.com's The Download, White discussed the brawl for the first time.

"As soon as Jones went up and their bodies touched, I would have separated them," said White. "Sometimes you'll see me put a hand in, or sometimes you'll see me do something else. I would have separated them. It was the head butt - Jones headbutted Cormier - that's what upset him and made him push him back. I would have got my arm in there before that contact was even made. I would have seen the contact coming and I would have stopped it. Then I would have been right in the middle.

"Would I have stopped that whole thing from going down, who the f--- knows? I wasn't here."

"One little thing can trigger two guys, who are the baddest dudes on the planet, who are face to face. That's what they do, period. People can try to sugar coat it or try to spin any way that they want, that's the reality. That's who they are, that's what they're paid to do and that's what you show up to watch. These guys, that's who they are to the core. And when you get two guys like that and you don't handle the situation the right way to defuse it, that's what happens. The difference is that Sholler has never been in that position before.”

"Dave Sholler doesn't really have any experience out there between the guys. There's times when you know something is going on and you're ready and you jump in there and get that thing defused. That's why I stand there. I don't stand there because I want to be in f---ing pictures, I'm there to make sure that kind of s--- doesn't happen."

"These guys are fighters, man, they're ready to go. And that's what makes the weigh-ins so amazing and why I love it so much. Those staredowns, there's nothing f---ing like it."

"The position that I get to stand in during those staredowns is the greatest position in all of f---ing sports. Nothing like being there when two guys are cutting weight, they're fighting the next day, they're away from their families for eight f---ing weeks, and they get to square off."

Fans are going to get plenty of opportunities for staredowns, with 10 UFCs in the next weeks.

that picture and caption is hilarious!!!

Hope a fight breaks out when dana is there so we can see what he'll really do Phone Post 3.0

He's absolutely right and I've been saying this since it happened - Dana wouldn't have let that happen. He knows when a heated staredown is about to take place and he steps in and keeps the guys from getting too close.

Sholler, however, took a different approach. When Jones and Cormier approached he looked at the ground, looked up, then he tried to get in between the fighters on his toes so he could be seen for pictures. He wasn't thinking about the fighters and how heated they were AT ALL.

Dana knows what guys are the most heated before the staredown and he keeps them away from each other when it's really intense. That's what Sholler should have done, but you could tell he was more concerned with getting his picture taken between Jones and Cormier.

Sholler deserves most of the blame for that staredown. He doesn't know what he's doing up there.

disbeliever - They are fighters, but they are also 2 grown professional men. It's not even during weigh ins when you are starving and dehydrated.

"They are fighters" is no excuse for their behavior IMO

True, they should be more professional, but they are fighters, again. We lock them in a cage and they beat the shit out of each other. When that is your only job description, you get all kinds.....

What I'm saying is, Jones is crazy and trying to get in DC's head.

It wouldn't happen because Dana is the master and all the fighters are his dogs.

it wasn't that funny

Its seems like Dana's case by case dealings with these disciplinary matters are based more on how he feels and not the rules set in place. If that's the case then is how he feels motivated by money, the names involved in the incident or what? If it were smaller name figters who weren't worth the trouble they caused would he have been relaxed about it or furious? Phone Post 3.0

Oh if Dana was only there to have put his arm between them!!!

Danas BLAF. Shollers not Phone Post 3.0

Sounds like the beginning of a commercial for a men's anti-aging clinic

NewOldTRT09er - I agree it's what they get paid to do in the cage. But it's also what they get paid NOT to do outside the cage.

I've seen Dana let fighters touch heads lots of times so I don't see why this would be any different. Also remember when Amderson shoulder checked Vitor in the face despite Dana being there? The only difference is Vitor didn't retaliate. Phone Post 3.0

Thing is they don't get paid for staredowns. It's expected that they do PR and they represent the UFC well (I think the UFC has done a good job in creating a good respectable reputation for themselves), but at the end of the day, you've got guys like Diaz where the rules just don't apply. They guy is literally only put up with because he can fight in the cage. The rest of his bullshit antics are only acceptable because Diaz fights pay the bills around the UFC headquarters.

At the end of the day, the UFC isn't selling tickets to press conferences and weigh ins. The fans pay to see fights and that is really all that matters. Get them in the cage on fight night and everything else can be worked with.

It would be ideal if they acted like professionals and I think the UFC should punish DC and Jones to make an example, but I don't expect that they will act like professionals because it's a fight and that's not always a realistic expectation of guys like them.

cheesesteak - It wouldn't happen because Dana is the master and all the fighters are his dogs.

This too. Jones wouldn't push Dana out of the way like that. They have future contracts to negotiate.

The only thing that would have been different is Jones wouldn't have pushed Dana off of the stage, to get to DC. The head butt still would have happened, and DC still would have pushed Jones. That's where it would have ended.

Dana's been in between guys that he couldn't keep from pushing and shoving before (Diaz/Penn, Anderson's shoulder bump to Chael, etc). The difference is, he's the boss and no fighter is going to throw the boss out of the way to get to their opponent...so it's stops there.
