DFW: Right now, I consider Hendricks a MW

Johny Hendricks has a well-publicized history of missing weight. One of the keys to making weight is maintaining dietary discipline outside of camp.

However, Hendricks showed up Tuesday afternoon in Houston 20 to 25 pounds over the non-title welterweight limit of 171, according to UFC vice president Marc Ratner.

Thursday night Hendricks was taken to the ER with cutting related medical issues. As is standard when a patient has dehydration-related issues, an IV was administered. Hendricks could no longer make weight, and the #1 contender fight with Tyron Woodley was cancelled.

In great news, Woodley get the next title shot at the winner of division champion Robbie Lawler vs. Carlos Condit. And in necessary news, Johny Hendricks is no longer a welterweight.

“Right now, I consider Johny Hendricks a middleweight,” said White to Kevin Iole for Yahoo Sports. “He’s near-death every time he cuts to 170. It’s hard every time. It’s dangerous and we’re not going to let guys do that. Sometimes, you have to protect guys from themselves.

“We just need to be very careful in these kinds of situations. We wouldn’t be doing our jobs if we let this guy keep trying to fight at a weight that he clearly can’t make [safely].”

Who do you want to see Hendricks fight next at middleweight?

He'll probably get an undersized MW like Gastelum did. Kennedy maybe if he comes back.

More weight classes are needed, especially with the new IV ban. Ten pound increments would work best imo:

155, 165, 175, 185, 195, 205, 225, unlimited for heavyweight. Phone Post 3.0

I wouldn't mind that at all if people were fighting closer to their natural weight Phone Post 3.0

Obviously the solution is that Hendricks slim down to 190 and cut from there.

Not that a 5'9" guy go up to a division ruled by a guy who is 6'3" and walks around at 220lb.

That will last one fight, maybe. He let Gastelum back he'll let Hendricks back. Phone Post 3.0

Most of these divisions are thin enough without watering them down further with more weight classes. Not saying I disagree, but there is a downside to this.

You'd dilute the divisions too much. Phone Post 3.0

This. I view extreme weight cutting sort of as cheating. But most of the fighters do it so I guess that put's them somewhat even.

it's not cheating but it's risky and guys should be punished accordingly for taking that extra risk and putting the event in jeopardy.

Yeesh, good luck fighting the top dogs (Weidman, Rockhold, Yoel, Jacare, etc) that probably outweigh Hendricks by a solid 15-25 lbs on fight night. Not only will they probably massively outweigh him but their frames will likely naturally hold that extra weight much better than him.

While I agree that more weight classes will work, the proposed classes above raise an important question.

If the classes are spread out like yours above, what happens to Robbie Lawler's 170 lb belt? Does he go to 165 or 175 as the champion automatically, and does he get to choose which one he goes to?

Agreed, I hate the idea of adding more weight classes. It would dilute the weight classes, and I highly doubt it would help the weight cutting issue anyway. Guys would still try to cut too much weight and not pay enough attention to diet beforehand.

When the IV ban was first announced my first thought was move all the divisions up 5 pounds with the exception of LHW and maybe add a 225 cruiserweight division. 130, 140, 150, 160, 175, 190, and 205. If guys aren't willing to fight closer to their natural weight then bring the weight to them. Of course its not a perfect idea but one that I think could work.

Also if someone wants to move down a weight class or stay in the weight class after missing weight I think a mandatory, supervised practice cut should be implemented into the rules. That would prevent a late cancellation like this one and also deter some from trying to do these extremes cuts.

How would anyone possibly outweight him by 25 lbs? I guarantee Hendricks would be cutting at least 10 lbs at middleweight. Nobody will be cutting 35 lbs with or without an IV.

For fuck's sake. He is just fine at his weight class. He has just gotten tired of staying at his optimal weight "off-season" (i.e. between fights) and wants to do too much by way of water cutting.

He just gets cocky and /or lazy with his weight in the months in between. It has nothing to do with more weight classes etc!

I think you'd be surprised at how heavy the top 5 guys are on fight night. Hendricks weighed roughly 185-190 on embedded and he was pretty shredded then.

Just do the math. Do you really think some middleweights are cutting 35+ lbs? (let alone whether they could do that without an IV)

What if you weighed in 6 hours before the event?
