DFW talks changes coming to ranking system

da Vinci 81 - Why wouldn't you do it by tenure? Have a tiered system based on the number of fights in the UFC. Not everyone will crack the top five but a fighter can still build a solid fanbase and should be rewarded for remaining in the UFC for several years. Phone Post 3.0

So Mir should get more than JBJ?

Imo? Yep. Mir is owed by zuffa more than any other fighter. Phone Post 3.0

I think that's good they remove inactive fighters since there will be money involved as long as there is an active and inactive ranking system and there is a standard for being placed in "inactive" and it's not willy nilly.

There will be a lot of fighters with sore feelings about the rankings now that there will money attached to it. I like the idea but it's going to be ugly at times.

Should Mir not get more than jusier formiga, john moraga? Phone Post 3.0
Where are they ranked and where is Mir (too lazy to look)? Thanks.

What does that have to do with how proceeds from uniform sponsorships are disbursed next year? Mir should get more uniform money than JBJ or most others? Why?

I have no idea where mir is ranked. The other two are in the top five. You'll have to do your own homework further to that. Phone Post 3.0

Mir's out of the top ten. I saved you the trouble. Phone Post 3.0

Frank mir is also a two time champ, has sme of th most impressive wins in UFC history, and has been around since the 30's. He helped bring the UFC through the Dark Ages with his exciting BJJ at HW. He headlined the most bought ppv of all time.

Why shouldn't he? He's spent plenty of time doing interviews, promotional work, and octagon time building not only his own brand but also putting asses in the seats over a 15 year career. His name recognition rivals anyone, including Jon Jones'.

It's going to need a major overhaul. Cage Potato put out an article today about the ten worst panelists on the UFC rankings, one of which is from the UG. But this whole thing needs some work and there is no right answer that will please everyone. http://www.cagepotato.com/the-top-ten-worst-ufc-rankings-panelists/

And people wonder why the rankings are so bad...

Madrugadao - If Mir was to sit on his ass and not promote a fight, while JBJ is getting into fights with Cormier and MacGregor is talking shit to any cunt that will listen, Mir should get paid more?

Should he get their win bonuses too?

I think this will be very hard to work out fairly, regardless of what method you use.

It is almost as if it would be a better idea for each fighter to seek out their own sponsorship. Then everyone could be sure they were getting their true market value...

Well the same could be said regardless of rankings. And Mir has lost four in row, do you think he would still be employed if he had sat on his ass not promoting fights? 99% of fighters in his position would be cut, which is why it says something about marketability and why it should be rewarded when he remains on the roster.

Tenure based sponsorships reward the guys who work their way up the division and it also rewards the guys who build that fanbase and recognition regardless of record. The two things the UFC wants from its fighters.

Ronda move up on the p4p again?

cheesesteak - Doe Tier 5 fighters get paid in reebok pumps and windbreakers?

Rogan's old hair plugs and Dana White's hotdog water

Here's an easy ranking system,

for ufc, pride, bellator, k-1, strikeforce fights:

victory = 1 point
victory by TKO, KO, submission, championship fight =2 points

draw=0

loss=-1 point
no fights in year-2 points.

Although the tier-system is good in theory it lacks any type of sophistication. I'm sure their stats people could come up with a more equitable system.

An easy example would be like this:

Sponsor Pay = Ranking + Tenure + Exposure (PPV vs. Fight Night vs. Prelim) + Champion / Former Champion Boost + Q Score

Doesn't take into account strength of schedule. So many variables but mostly the small sample size of fights in a reasonable amount of time make almost any rankings flawed. Phone Post 3.0

while i think you are right overall, it gives more meaning to the type of win in a win loss schedule and punishes fighters for inactivity. also, the higher up the rung, the less they tend to fight in a year anyways.

it doesn't affect a fighter with an excellent win to loss ratio, but if two fighters have the same win-loss, then the higher ranked one is the one that finishes more of his opponents.

it also promotes more exciting fighters getting to the top of the pile. in shooto, i believe you had to have 90% submission/ko rate before you got elevated a tier.

also, it's better than the arbitrary so and so getting a title fight because he won 3 in a row and we like him.

Cant do tenure or record. Gives fighters too much incentive to avoid tough fights. Cub could fight Edgar for a shot at Aldo, two murderes. Or he could execute 3-4 bums a year and probably be paid just as much. At the very least he'd of never agreed to fight a wrestler.

FlyingKnee_bar - what about a fighter that isnt neccessarily ranked high but still put ass's in seats...like diego or nick diaz or whatever? They still bring in significant revenue but wont earn the piece they deserve from the reebok deal...

If Nick actually stays active or whatever? then he'll most likely be a top 5 ranked fighter, making around what he deserves as a fighter from the deal.  If he actually focuses, he may even become a champion, and that would bolster it even further.

Honestly, the person whose take I would like to see on this after their first fight on the deal to get an honest understanding of how they think this system works compared to the old one is Joe Lauzon.   I'd say he is in the situation you would be talking about more than anyone, due to the fact that he is a huge fan favorite, but is a perrenial gate keeper.

I personally am holding my opinion on the Reebok deal until I get information from fighters that have actually recieved their cut from a Reebok sponsored fight, and what kind of comparison they make against each other.

Will this or will this not affect Rousey's ranking as a better pound-for-pound fighter than Danile Cormier and Alexander Gustafsson?

This article is compelling as hell. The UG's own Chris Palmquist had some bizarre rankings lolz. Either Chris doesn't watch MMA or he has the fight IQ of a grilled cheese sandwich.

wow....

5. Chris Palmquist (MixedMartialArts.com) – When I first read Palmquist’s rankings I expected no problems from one of the guys who runs the UG. However, I am fully prepared for the hate mail I’m going to receive when I say that Chris Palmquist either jobbed his rankings or he hasn’t actually watched MMA. His rankings as seen here are downright astonishing for someone who is a partner in one of the largest worldwide MMA forums.

Palmquist has pretty much ranked the loser of every fight outcome higher than the winner for practically all major top 10 fighters this year.

Mark Hunt is ranked higher than Junior Dos Santos, Big Nog higher than Roy Nelson, Mauricio Rua over Dan Henderson, Michael Bisping over Tim Kennedy, Erick Silva over Dong Hyun Kim, Cub Swanson over Ricardo Lamas, Renan Barao below Raphael Assuncao and Dominick Cruz, Eddie Wineland the #6 bantamweight but Johnny Eduardo unranked.

Honestly, I have to believe Palmquist just phoned it in and picked his favorites, or copy and pasted old rankings. I was tempted to rank Palmquist the #1 worst offender on the list simply because he ranked Erick Silva (4 wins against cut fighters, 4 losses to top 10 fighters) as the #9 welterweight in the UFC…ABOVE THE GUY WHO KNOCKED HIM OUT. Shame!
