He made excuses in the cage, anytime you say I'm not making excuses but.. You should just stop, it never goes down well, I think it's a given that fighters fight injured most the time and it wasn't like he put in a bad performance

Well, I wouldn't consider those 'excuses' if he was legit hurt. I mean, obviously (actually, it seems like it's not that obvious for most people...) injuries can affect your training camp, and the fight eventually.
A real excuse would have been when after Conor lost the first fight his camp he said he lost because 'he didn't cut weight'. He didn't cut weight. Let that sink in for a moment.
