I know I'm beating a dead horse, but I just watched the fight for myself and I gotta say this.
So, did Hughes ever take down BJ?
Hell no. GSP did it 4 times. And any true MMAer knows that sometimes a fighters defense on his back makes it hard to do any real damage. GSP did however land some nice elbows on the ground despite penns defense. Having watched the actual fight for the first time after following the play by play here, you BJ lovers completely overexaggerated bj's activeness on the ground. He never went for a real attempt at a submission. GSP was never in danger of being submitted.
Also, WTF were some of you talking about GSP being exposed? Hardly. And even if he was, does it matter when it took BJ Penn, the guy who stopped Hughes' 2 year reign as champion, to do it? With the possible exception of matt hughes, no one else has what it takes to "expose" GSP like that.
It was a very close fight, and GSP was bloody, but mostly because of a bloody nose. Anyone whose ever played a contact sport like wrestling or football knows that nose bleeds can get out of hand. I'm not really sure if Penn gouged GSP in the eye. it's hard to tell. Either way, no matter how messed up GSP's face was, BJ WAS NEVER IN GREAT CONTROL IN THE 1ST ROUND. GSP was throwing just as many punches and a LOT more leg kicks than BJ. After a while BJ avoided contact with his leg kicks because he didn't want anymore.
BJ won round one and lost round 2 and 3. Live with it.
