Did watching Shamrock terrify you of Father Time?

Much respect for a pioneer of the sport, but he moved slower than a sloth with ALS.

Still, here are some facts about Ken Shamrock:

1. He's 51 - not like he's 71 or.
2. Still appears to be in great shape with nice muscularity.
3. Has managed to keep his weight down as he's aged (not a beer belly yet).
4. May very well be on PEDS, which should make him perform even better.
5. Is/Was a professional athlete who used to compete against top tier guys at a high level. Was King of Pancrase, defeating Bas Rutten twice, UFC Superfight champ, UFC Hall of Famer.

And yet, it was painful to watch him attempt to "move" in that fight.

So it got thinking. Regardless of whether or not the fight was fixed, if a guy like this moves so painfully slow and looks so sloppy at 51, what the hell hope do the rest us non-pro athletes have when it comes to aging?

Do we look even more pathetic than Ken when we jog, play pick up hoops, age 40 and over softball, etc.

It's made me terrified of aging. How about you?

No, it terrified me of bad acting.  I've seen better performances in Michael Bay movies.

Ken has put his body and joints through more trauma than any normal person would experience in 10 lifetimes.

You'll be ok. Phone Post 3.0

I haven't fought MMA for two decades on top of doing professional wrestling. I think I'll hold up a little better than Ken.

Ken has no lower body left. His upper body looks fantastic, but look at his quad muscles. They were once massive, now they are tiny. Ken's knees are shot, he probably can't get his leg muscles to contract during workouts like he once could. Phone Post 3.0

"he probably can't get his leg muscles to contract during workouts"

He also can't seem to get his arm muscles to contract duriing chokes.

at 43, ive been in the cant believe i am this old  stage for many years

RNC in just Jiu jitsu is not the same as in MMA. Not saying it wasn't a work or anything.. Phone Post 3.0

It made me terrified that I actually DVRed that bullshit and wasted my precious time watching it.

Yes. But to be fair I starting thinking about my mortality watching an HBO behind the scenes of Pitch Perfect 2. So everything makes me think of stuff like that. Phone Post 3.0

TopGrinder - Ken and kimbo made me think boy time is a mofo. Kimbo looks like he has trouble even walking. Ken is looking like a worse Tito Ortiz. Phone Post 3.0

Both of them were high level athletes that wrecked their bodies in their sport. Keep your weight down, keep a decent amount of muscle, stay flexible and with some luck you'll be in better functional shape than both of them at their ages.

Ken did brutally hard training for years and years on end, along with professional fighting AND professional wrestling. Most of us will not have 1/100th the wear and tear on our bodies as he does when we reach 51.

No,Father Time has already kicked my ass.

Once the opponent is flat on his stomach offering no resistance and your arm is fully under the neck, it's the same.

Hell, even somone with zero ground experience could just bulldog it and finish at that point.

But But But... take into account fatigue level, Kimbos greasyness, and the fact that kimbo had like 50lbs on him. Phone Post 3.0

Agreed. I understand there is a lot of wear and tear on their bodies, especially Ken's. But they were both likely on PEDS and probably pain killers for possible injuries or age related ailments.

Yet they still looked horribly slow and old and shit, even though they're not all that old.

Could you imagine how they would have looked in that fight if they weren't on anything leading up to it before stopping in order to pass the (I'm assuming) pre and post fight drug tests?

dan severn fighting at about age 51
