Do You Believe in Luck in MMA

NO.

not once the ref says go.

maybe things can happen outside of the ring, before a fight that could be considered good or bad luck.

but once you step in there, you either attain your goal or you don't.
and since that principle is reciprocal, that takes luck out of the equation.

thats life: if your move works, it works. you earned it.

yes luck happens. The more you train the less luck will be a factor.

wondering how "lucky" chuck's thumb is...

I have fought one guy with a losing record, I have been submitted once in 11 fights to that guy.

Luck? Not at all, bad technique on my part and better on his at that time.

Excuses suck.

This sport is so pure that who ever excutes the best wins almost always.

I have seen guys get their legs trapped in - under the cage then get hit that is bad luck but other than something like that luck is a excuse

I've got five off the top of my head:

  1. Lindland knocking himself out on a throw.

  2. Kerr knocking himself out on a take down.

  3. Fujita's corner throwing in the towel 2 seconds into his Grand Prix
    fight with Coleman.

  4. Tank's slip against Don Frye.

  5. Vitor's belt winning eyelid punch against Couture.

I am sure there are many others. And clearly, there are bad luck fights.

Who remembers Zuffa's infamous first foray onto pay per view at UFC
33. Bad luck.

shit happens i wouldent call it luck

It depends on what you mean by luck. Defining a lucky "punch" the same as you would a lucky shot in pool, then it probably happens pretty frequently. Unfortunately, most fighters don't have time to call their shots, so you never know what was beautifully calculated or extremely lucky.

I mean, a fighter is going to be throwing shots intended to down his opponent, the same as you make a shot in pool to sink a ball. Sometimes a kick that was meant to hurt ends up KO'ing a guy because he dives into it face first (See Liddell vs. Babalu).

I don't think it was lucky that Liddell won that fight, but there was a certain amount of luck involved having Babalu bend over and eat that kick as hard as he did. If it wasn't luck, and Chuck planned it like that from the beginning... that's amazing (but we'll never know until fighters start calling their shots ahead of time).

chuck tagged babalu with a huge right hand to start the fight... that might have taken him out of his game and forget his technique

  1. lindland didnt knock himself out, he went for a high risk maneuver, his takedown was stuffed and he paid the price

  2. again...high risk maneuver, bad technique and solid opponent

  3. he was injured

  4. bad technique again (no balance)

  5. legit cut stoppage, if it happened 3 minutes into the round would you be griping?

As I said in this thread, I believe there are lucky wins but that is why there are rematches. It is a low chance that a person would get lucky several times.

good point but the word luck is just thrown around to much it may have been luck or just another veriable in the fight all im saying is that im wishy washy on the way that the way luck is used but thats just me

ok then... everyone stop discussing this ASAP

well we shall cover it again my friend

Apparently Sak's kimura on Renzo was a fluke.

And I agree with Ethan.

ABSOLUTELY !!!!!!!

Okay, for everyone, how about as a competitor---have you been beaten by an opponent that you know is inferior, who would likely only win 1 out of 10 against you? In your heart do you dismiss the win as lucky or attribute it to all the hard work and skill he put into his game? And I mean what you really think deep down, not what you would say out of respect to your opponent.

Yes, it just doesn't happen as often as people think IMHO.

"It depends on what you mean by luck"

Yes it does. You guys need to decide what you are arguing about.

"Yeah, if you fight 19 fights and win them all and then loose on the 20th fight we'll chalk that up to luck."

But this could be interpreted in different ways:

1) Maybe your opponent got better and you got worse. So you won the matches when you were the better fighter and lost when you were the inferior fighter.

2) Maybe statistically, you're only supposed to win 15 out of 20 fights. But YOU were lucky because you won 19 out of 20. Maybe you should be saying, "I'm so lucky I only lost once."
