Don't Cover Ear w/ Hug Chok Escapes - Jason Scully

The hug choke is one of the highest percentage submissions from side control and I believe the biggest reason for this is because so many grapplers are trying to defend and escape the choke just by covering their ear.

Basically they take the hand of the arm that's trapped and they place it on their ear like they're answering a phone. I'm not exactly sure how this became common practice but it doesn't work as well as other options in my opinion.

In the video that I share with you today I talk about another option in regards to defending against your opponent's hug choke.

I also give you a few ideas on how to make the situation go better in your favor.

This style of hug choke defense and escape is my number one defense that works for me the most.

Thanks for watching,
Jason Scully

Never heard it called a hug choke.  It's just an arm triangle/head and arm choke right?

Thx for always posting these videos.

I call it a hug choke. This is mainly because I use a hugging variation more then an arm triangle variation. I find the "hug" variation to be much stronger.

The escapes work with either variation though. Phone Post 3.0

I use the "phone call" and it works pretty well from there then grab the leg and escape. The phone call is only meant to create some space.

One thing to mention is that while this escape works well there is a decent risk of your opponent taking your back or attacking for an ezekiel choke from the back with the gi on, so definitely be on the look out for your opponent to follow up with those attacks.

Great video, thanks!

I just watched. Thanks, Jason. Seriously. You're awesome for what you do. Keep them coming. I really appreciate all of these videos.

P.S. A lot of times I learn how to better apply my submissions because of your escape videos. :p Phone Post 3.0

Joe Rogan should do a podcast with the (former?) hog watcher as a where-are-they-now type of deal.
