I've decided to finally get a home security camera. I think I've narrowed it down to the Dropcam, which seems to be the best selling one currently, or the Simplicam which is fairly new but is selling pretty well and is a direct competitor to the Dropcam.
The highest end Dropcam is $200 and the recording plan is $100/yr for 7 days worth of recording. The Simplicam is $149 for the camera and $50/yr for 1 day of recording.
Also the Simplicam lets you add additional cameras without charging more for the recording part. The Dropcam charges you more for every camera you add.
Which should I get? Also, given what we know about how secure cloud storage is, do the weenies that work at these companies have access to everyone's camera feeds and recorded videos?
its free to check the cam live feed at any time and for free it will send a picture to your email whenever the motion detector goes off. If you want to pay 50 a year it will take video when the motion detector goes off.
I know that you hate the pigs, so you probably won't take my advice....
But... Unlike the average uneducated swine, I do have a master's degree in IS.
You use the phrase "security camera," yet you putting it indoors? That's not really a security camera, but something that basically tells you that you have already been broken into.
I do a LOT of this type of work. Spend the money and do it RIGHT (it will be cheaper in the long run and you won't pay monthly fees).
The shit I use does all of the above--with NO monthly fees.
Do you own the place (e.g. can you drill through walls if need be)?

Thanks, Porky!! Unfortunately I live in a condo so putting up cameras outside is not allowed. I also can't drill through the walls.
In an ideal scenario I'd have cameras outside and inside, both would be recorded on a DVR and also on a remote server.
But as it is I'm pretty limited in what I can do. My best option is a camera watching the inside of my place, which is pretty small so with one camera I can watch my living room and my front door, then with another camera I can watch the living room from the opposite angle and my rear sliding door would be in that picture.
So basically, with two cameras I can watch both points of entry and my living room.
All of those reasons are why I'm down to the Dropcam, Simplicam, and Y Cam. So far the Y Cam is looking like the best option because of the free offsite recording. The Simplicam is in second place. I've almost ruled out the Dropcam because I'd be charged double to record the second camera.
Ze Dano - Ok so let's say someone is breaking in while you are at work. Are you able to get there soon enough to apprehend them?
If not, what are you doing with the footage?
I'm not sure what your end-game is here with all of the recording equipment.
The cameras I'm talking about have motion detection and will send me an immediate alert if they detect something. I can then call the cops (yes, the cops, and actually have them do their jobs) and hopefully they can show up in time. If not, I can give them the footage and maybe they can identify the guy, or maybe even I can identify him if it happens to be one of my neighbors or something like that.
You do know that criminals have been apprehended because they were caught on security cams committing crimes, right?
Came across a new system called Canary that looks awesome except it's not out yet. Looks like they've been trying to get it to market since the middle of last year and it's still not out. Not sure if that's a good or bad thing. It might be full of bugs and technical issues. Latest thing I read was that they've promised to get it out by this November.

I'm interested.... I want outdoor video that I can access via iphone and can withstand canadian winters.

Please feel free to educate me.
I'm also interested. I had someone go into the house and steal some stuff a couple weeks ago and would like some info.
The door was unlocked so I need to just keep everything locked up but I'd still liked to be educated. My wife wants cameras because we are gone all day and she'd like to know if someone is coming onto the property.
Mostly because my wife is OCD. So I put one in the garage so she could make sure the door was closed. I also put one in the window looking out the front of my home to see who is at my door. I'm happy with them thus far, super easy to set up.
