Eddie Bravo is right - BJJ needs striking

Combat jiu jitsu looks like a training method for beating up your spouse. But Eddie has a point. BJJ has gotten too weird. too crazy. It's time to bring in strikes to keep everyone honest. The game isn't related to fighting anymore. It's become its own autistic thing that doesn't resemble a fight or conflict. Right now BJJ is entering its karate phase and soon will die off like karate if they don't switch to something more practical

the only issue now is, what strikes?

Open handed palm strikes? Maybe that isn't necessary. Maybe there should be a type of glove you should wear where you can hit your opponent but it wont hurt as much as a punch or cause concussions. But there would be an element of pain.

the bjj striking glove.

Noogies and wedgies.

LMAO

the issue with bjj striking isnt on the groud its on the feet. most grapplers dont have serious issues on the ground its getting the fight there so with out the ability to transition to the floor from striking range smoothly is the missing link not open handed gnp

I agree about the standing part but there’s a huge problem with people getting brutalized quickly on the ground. Look at Machida v. Derek Brunson iirc for one of many cases in point.

What about Combat sambo, they wear mma gloves and head gear.

What in Combat Sambo's ruleset encourages the infighting?  Ive never seen a match turn into a kickboxing match but am ignorant to the rules.

High point value for takedowns?

and the only way to address that is ttaining entries against striking. I believe there is also an issue on 5he ground.....defaults. So much of what is engrained is nonsense.

Just to fire up Sgt Slaphead, just go train MMA if you wanna fight

People who do “sport” BJJ like doing sport BJJ, nothing wrong with that, just let them grapple bro

*HULK SMAAAAAAASH

While watching two expert submission grapplers butt scoot around playing patty cake might look ridiculous to the layman, you have to remember that those guys are looking for micro opportunities for imbalancing and limb exposure.  It only looks ridiculous because their games are air tight.  Like a scoreless inning. It happens.  But you can put one of those guys against any human who is not versed in it and they will surely rip a limb right off.  Strikers included.  The old Royce Gracie front kick to double leg shot will still work on 99 percent of the able bodied population.

That's basically it. Strikes don't score at all unless you knock the guy down, which is pretty hard to do with the pads and short time limits on an open mat.

I would say fighters should have long gi pants and rashguard too to add more friction and make it more realistic. So there will be no ground and pound but strategic punching.....

But you're talking about the cream of the crop. Not your everyday hobbiest. Sure someone like Lepri would beable to maul 99% of the untrained population.

But what about Bob, who sits at a desk, has a 9-5 with a family and shows up 3x a week?

BJJ being divorced from vale tudo has been terrible for the art.  I witnessed regular hobbiest BJJ guys striking on the ground the other day.  Their sportive guards offered them no protection from strikes.  Guys on top of guard would strike with impunity.  But it was fine, because none of them knew how to throw a meaningful strike anyway.  It only gets worse from here.

If bob has shown up 3x a week and has reached blue belt level, he will do just fine against a striking opponent.  You have to consider that the average idiot isn't trained in striking either, so let's say for whatever reason they are in bobs closed guard, the odds of bob getting any significant damage are low.  Can bob sub him? Maybe.  But Bob isn't getting beat to a pulp.

After what I saw, I'd say that bob has a good chance of getting his face punched into the asphalt by someone untrained, and certainly punched into the ground by someone with rudimentary training in MMA.

Yeah,... I disagree with this.

Pissed off Bill's aggression is likely more than enough to put a beating on blue belt Bob and his sporty guard.
