UFC featherweight Frankie Edgar appeared recently on Ariel Helwani's The MMA Hour, and expressed disappointment that Chad Mendes, not he, was selected to fight Conor McGregor for the Interim title, should division champion Jose Aldo be unable to fight at UFC 189 on July 11, due to his rib injury.

Mendes is coming off a win, but his fight before that was a loss to Jose Aldo. It was his second loss to the champion. However, those are the sole losses on Mendes' record. Edgar is on a four-fight fight win streak, coming off a close, fight of the night loss to Aldo.

The UFC's media-generated rankings have Mendes as the #1 contender, and Aldo as #2, and that apparently was the deciding factor.

"I was a little surprised by it," said Edgar, as transcribed by Shaun Al-Shatti for MMAfighting.com. "Somebody called and asked if I was willing to step in, so I almost wish they didn't ask me at all, get my hopes up for nothing.

"Not taking anything away from Mendes, obviously he's a stud and he goes in there, he won his last fight by knockout. But you know, his last two fights he's 1-1. He has only a one-fight win streak. I have a four-fight win streak. So yeah, I am a little surprised. I think at one point after the Cub fight, or at some point, I was the No. 1 contender. I think it was after [Mendes'] fight with Aldo actually, I was the No. 1 contender. Then all of a sudden, somehow it got flopped."

"They pretty much said, Mendes is the No. 1 contender. I guess they're going by numbers, but... I'm trying to put my foot in my mouth here, but you gotta go by the rankings all the time, not just sometimes.

"I understand it's a business and that's what they're looking for. But in this instance, I felt like, alright, if he's No. 1, I'm No. 2, it's a fine line right there. But they went with him, they didn't go with me, I can't be crying about it right now."

"I had bruised rubs in college during wrestling. ... But everything's different, I can't really say. I would like to say I would've fought. That's what I would like to say, but you never know.

"I think the best case scenario is Aldo and McGregor do fight, and it's not a close fight, it's not a controversial fight, and I get the winner. That's the best-case scenario.

"I'm not going to sit around and wait forever. I'm fighting. I want to fight before this year is out, and of course I want to fight for that title first and foremost. But if they go a different route, I'm not going to sit around and wait.

"(I'm) definitely annoyed. But again, I'm not one to sit there and (complain). The decision is made. I've gotta keep moving and worry about what's next. There's a lot of ‘ifs' in the air right now. I think July 11th we'll figure out what's really going on and I guess that'll my be future."

aldo is #2?? lol

aldo vs aldo.. who wins?

Nothing makes sense anymore. From DC getting a title shot in the first place, to his gifted 2nd shot after losing & Bader being skipped, to Arlovski being skipped and well now Frankie being skipped.

"The UFC's media-generated rankings have Mendes as the #1 contender, and Aldo as #2, and that apparently was the deciding factor."

I am confused, so Aldo is #2 contender for the title he already holds?

I don't feel bad for Frankie, he got a title shot once after 2 straight losses. I don't see the gigantic injustice here Phone Post 3.0

Maybe Frankie should think twice before announcing (only weeks ago) that his next fight will be for the Featherweight championship or he's not fighting at all.

Fighting McGregor for an "interim" or "contender" match is NOT fighting for the Featherweight Championship.

He was clear that he should be fighting Aldo or the guy who beats Aldo. Period.

Truth although one was a pretty tough decision. It really is a toss up who should be the standby guy. But the media rankings have Chad ahead of Frankie. It is really close with only a few extra polls having Chad in front. Phone Post 3.0

Edgar v. McGregor is a money fight. Throwing Frankie in with two weeks would waste the buildup for when they eventually meet in the cage.

Mendes is an easier fight for McGregor and would look similar to Conor v. Televised Siver.

Have the midgets fight to settle who is the best.

Mendes fought Aldo 9 months ago and has one win since. Hes also lost to Aldo twice.

Frankie fought Aldo a year and a half ago with 4 wins since and only lost to Aldo once.

Anymore "logic" youd like to use justifying this match?

Edgar benefited from the same bullshit matchmaking when he got a title fight against Aldo after his previous 4 fights went (in order) draw, win, loss, loss. Oddly enough he didn't give a shit about what was fair back then, yet now some great injustice has occurred because he got line jumped.

If he didn't care or find anything so egregiously unfair that he refused the fight because he hadn't earned it when he got Lamas' spot, why the fuck should I care when Mendes jumped him? Phone Post 3.0

I don't understand that either. What if chad fights and ends up winning. Just sets up medez vs Aldo 3 Phone Post 3.0

They were losses that could have went either way. The only reason he lost is bc they had to pick a winner. i had him winning both bendo fights, as many ppl did Phone Post 3.0

Edgar vs Mendes

Not really rocket science. Wtf is Joe Silva is waiting for?
