I just watched the fight. After the first eye poke, Herb Dean warned Edwards about his fingers. Edwards IMMEDIATELY resumed leading with his fingers. It looked like he was throwing JKD eye jabs. He kept doing it until he connected again.
Obviously, Leon deserves blame. But, it’s against the rules to lead with your fingers. Early on, Leon showed he was putting Belal at risk. Herb could have prevented this from escalating.
Everyone establishes distance with their fingers. The gloves allow them to. Don't hate the player, hate the game. UFC needs to fix this. No blame on herb dean for one fighter accidentally poking another fighter

I agree. I do it, too. I blame the UFC first and foremost. But, I encourage you to rewatch. The angle and danger posed by Leon’s fingers were unusually bad. He went past Jon Jones territory. It was obvious from after the first poke that it posed a real risk.

After a warning is given a second offense should be a dq and a win for Belal. This was a rare case where i thought a guy who was fowled wasn't playing up his injury. He really couldn't continue.

I definitely agree that Belal wasn’t playing it up. I think he was in shock.
I wish Herb had taken a point away when Leon kept extending his fingers.
Agreed, and this was my initial reaction right after the fight. Herb also shares some blame in the Anders illegal knee situation. He handled the latter very poorly IMO.
I had already seen the result and knew it ended by eye poke so was looking for it, but seemed that after he first one there was several other clear jabs/paws with the fingers stretched out, seems like it’s one of those things people do all the time but it’s only ever brought up if they actually catch someone
Eye pokes are illegal. So is minor joint manipulation.
Next time a fighter starts throwing open hands the other fighter needs to grab them and break them. THEN cite this fight and say “hey, it should be a NC. I didn’t even get a warning.”
If a foul is a foul is a foul, then it should all be treated the same. Fingers will heal. Eyes might not.
Its definitely a glove issue. The refs can only do so much with warnings and point deductions. Some fighters just stick their hands out that way. It's not on purpose, it's just instinct. A glove that forces their hands to be more closed would help mitigate this issue.

Seems like proper treatment of this behaviour would also help.
Enough with warnings and no contests.
Warn. Take points. Poke the other guy more than once? DQ, you lose. No instant rematch. Fall in the rankings.
Until there are serious consequences, who the hell is motivated to work on their “instinct”?

It’s also instinct to grab the fence - no excuses.
