Just had a look on Box rec at Sakara's boxing record.
He is 6-1. His 6 wins come against people with a combined record of 0-19. 1 of which was 0-17.
His one fight against an 8-1 fighter resulted in a knockout loss.
If someone with an average pro boxing record came in to MMA they would own, and people would be creaming themselves over their 'elite striking'.
If they didnt get taken down and submitted in seconds.
about as elite as it gets are the kickboxers, if you wanna call them "elite" They wouild all get owned by a decent pro boxer
Kind of like Monson's pro boxing. I had heard he was something like 4-0 so I expected some very good hands in his last MMA fight. Not his striking was very mediocre. I imagine what his boxing opponents were like.
coming from the kickboxing world, I knew of mark hominick before his ufc and tko stuff. He's ELITE. quite frankly although sam stout has competed in k-1 max succesfully, hominick is the better of the two. Thompkins has a phenomenal team.
Nobody mentioned 6 months of sprawl training yet?
Kermit Cintron fought recently, scoring a 8th KO over David Estrada (1 time opponent of Shane Mosley). Emmanual Steward is now training Cintron.
There are so many bums and cans competing in professional boxing nowadays that it is very easy to build a solid record with the right management team behind you. Records don't mean shit in boxing anymore. I'd be more inclined to look at World Rankings by the different federations as a more telling gauge of a boxer's true abilities. Rest assured if a boxer in the top 20 in their weight class ever decided to compete in MMA, they would easily have the best hands in the sport and be a bitch to deal with on the feet.
"about as elite as it gets are the kickboxers, if you wanna call them "elite" They wouild all get owned by a decent pro boxer"
You've got to be kidding me.
ask Ray Mercer and Francois Botha. they both got owned in K1 a couple of years ago. could'nt deal with the kicks. now just add in the takedown and submission aspects of MMA and there is your answer. pro boxers are great at what they do dealing with hands from the waist up. Joe Calzaghe would murder Matt Hughes in a boxing match; however in a streetfight or MMA bout Hughes would DESTROY him. end of thread, probably not.
anderson silva is elite. he has 24 thai boxing matches before he entered vale tudo. I also belive Curtis Stout is an elite mma striker. though he lost to silva on the ground, hes the only fighter Im aware of that silva declined to stand with. I hope and there is good reason to hope that like manhoeff we might get a k-1 deal to do both mma and k-1 rules fights. Melvin is elite in my mind. a pro boxing record means nothing. But people like lytle have started to amass a respectable record against decent opponents. I really think hominick is elite. Hes a bit small for k-1 max but technically I think he would do well.
Why do people keep bringing up Ray Mercer and Frans Botha? Ray was 44, used and abused by the time he entered K-1. Over a DECADE past his prime. Frans Botha wasn't great to begin with and he also was well past his best days.
I wonder if that Jeremy Williams rumor is true. He about as elite a boxer we'll see in MMA. He has no chin though, a spit could KO him. We'll see how his chin holds up in MMA.
"now just add in the takedown and submission aspects of MMA and there is your answer."
Do you expect Boxers not to cross train?
Some Top strikers do well in MMA , like Crocop.
Some do very bady, like Stefan Leko.
There have been way more good strikers absolutelly sucking in MMA.
jens pulver, frank shamrock, bas rutten, maurice smith, cro cop, hunt, liddell, sakara, gomi, tito is learning little by little, pat miletich, lebanner...
