There's a lot of buzz about an EMP warning by DHS recently. Thoughts?

It's been getting more press coverage than I've ever seen. It's worrisome to say the least. Trump has implemented an aggressive anti - EMP program though. Basically if you try to shut off our lights, we wore shut off your population. For good.

Antifa or whoever is not dropping an emp bomb. The only ones able to do it is China and Russia. Even then it is full on invasion.

We are talking about a Electromagnetic pulse bomb.  This is not some fire bomb.

This is more then the power is shut off. This means every single thing electrical is fried. We are sent back into the middle ages.

Also if China or Russia did do it our military is set up for it. Navy ships for example have different shields for it.

The big fear is if it’s set off at altitude. Then it can affect huge areas.

Even bombs/rockets designed just for emp it is very sophisticated, expensive, and very large. They are massive military grade.

One nuke set off at high altitude could knock out electronics in large areas of the US. As in, many states, potentially a third or so of the US, maybe more, all at once, in an instant. 

Also note that a solar flare can do pretty much the same thing and it is really only a matter of time before one hits and sends the entire planet back to the stone age. 

Start the year with Wuhan and end it with a nuke. Sounds about right.

Why bother with an EMP?  It's so overrated in effect.  If some country were to attempt this, why not just nuke us?  The response would be exactly the same as an EMP is a nuclear attack.

That's a great book. Kind of terrifying to read as you start to understand the realities of what would happen in a situation like that.

correct me if I'm wrong but didn't they use an EMP in the movie ocean's 11 to rob the casino?    I get it, it's just a dumb movie but isn't that part of the movie?      

I have zero idea what it takes to build one of them but if it's just electronic parts and no radioactive materials like enriched plutonium or whatever the fuck goes into a nuclear weapon, then is it crazy to think that some terrorist origanization could convince some electrical engineer to help them build one?    

I hope I'm completely wrong but again, I have no idea.

Consider how powerful a lightning strike is.  That is a naturally occuring EMP.  We don't have any non nuclear devices that can come close the electrical output of a lightning strike.  Do lightning strikes take out the whole country's electrical grid and put us back into the Stone Age?  In worst case they might take down a block but most buildings have infrastructure to prevent this from happening.

THe only realistic EMP attack that could take down a city's grid is a nuclear explosion at which point, people would be far less concerned about electricity and more about being dead.

As regards non-nuclear EMPs, from wiki:

It is extremely hard to create EMP without a nuclear weapon. It is possible, yes, but extremely hard, time consuming, and the effect is nowhere near as great. It is easier to buy a nuke on the black market than create an nuclear-free EMP unless you are a large nation state actor like Russia or China. But again, even then, it is nowhere near as strong.

The higher the altitude the nuke is detonated, the stronger and larger the EMP blast is. Three nukes detonated at specific altitudes would take out the entire power grid of north America, save for maybe the southern tip of Florida and some areas of southern Texas.

A nuclear blast on the ground does produce EMP, but it does not spread like a high altitude detonation. So if a nuke goes off, everything in the area is destroyed, but a little bit outside the blast zone things are pretty normal from an EMP perspective. You would basically need to detonate nukes at their blast perimeters across the country to generate the same amount of EMP as you would with a high altitude detonation.

The Russians actually developed a version of the TU-95 specifically to detonate EMPs. Extremely high altitude, extremely light for long range, and low on fuel as they would basically be one way trips. But even that crap is outdated now.

EMP completely destroys circuitry. The power grid is extremely prone to this damage, as we do not generally keep a stockpile of transformers. Just for example, those large transformers at power plants cost millions of dollars and up to two years to build.

Look around you, how many things do YOU depend on that depend on electricity? Pretty much everything. The US getting EMP’d would send us into the dark ages, and in the first 2-3 months millions upon millions upon millions would die. The first few days alone the death toll would be staggering.
