Enjoying 'Bodybuilding' routine

So I have been dealing with golfers elbow and a knee injury from work which has taken me from my typical Squat-Bench-Dead-Pullup-OH press-Row routine.

So I can keep training I have been doing a typical BB split routine with lighter weights and higher reps and I have to say after years of abandoning such routines I am really enjoying it.

I never realized how much fun cable crossovers can be again lol.

It is also a nice mental break from constantly pushing poundages.

It def has merits and I will alternate a BB routine into my training cycles as an active rest or mental break.

Just my .02

Feel free to respond with 'fuck your knee'

Fuck you knee? ;-)

Nah, I've gone back to doing more secondary/accessory work than I have done in ages, and I'm really enjoying it at the moment.

There's no such thing as active rest. Your either resting or not. But whatever you enjoy, do it. Phone Post 3.0

True I agree...I stand corrected.

Let me rephrase then by saying its a nice break when I want to cut way back on intensity

Active rest is an oxymoron

If you are not doing "Squat-Bench-Dead-Pullup-OH press-Row" and you are not lifting with intensity, then you are not doing a bodybuilding routine. Bodybuilders do that isolation shit and additional volume as the icing on the cake, but the cake is still the same big compound heavy lifts that everyone else does.

Variety is What keeps me consistent (oxymoron, I know).

Enjoy it, man. Give your joints a break. Phone Post

Bodybuilding workout? I haven't gotten pumped like that since grade school.

My elbow hurts when I brush my teeth and my knee when I take my pants off

Grade school here I come!

I knew I should have kept those baggy clown pants

Zubaz!

^^^^The fuck was I thinking back then

WOW!!

I used to own (and wear) ZUBAZ...yeah, I said it. I had a bunch of those crazy huge shirts and stuff...I think I gave some to one of my sisters and she uses them when she is being lazy around the house.

TAKU

I hear you. Lately I've switched back to the old 90's bodybuilding routines and am actually enjoying working out again. I am actually starting to look more symmetrical too. It's good to take a break from the intense mma strength and conditioning every once and a while. Especially if your doing it with no competition goals. It gets a little silly sometimes to train like your fighting on the next pay per view when your not. it gets taxing on the body..The change is good and I think the balance will actually help out for the next time you start to train for athletic conditioning. i could be wrong but it is a theory of mine.

lol, fashion goes in circles, they might make a comeback someday.

I'm the exact same as you.

Pad Works, Judo, Heavy Lifting/Tons of reps - and for what? I'm not exactly on a Jon Jones undercard!

It IS great (IMO) to train like that, though.

It gives you mental and physical strength in leaps and bounds, your conditioning is off the scale and you become tougher.

But it CAN cost a FORTUNE and it DOES burn you out after a while, so the change of pace (10 sets of 10 and tons of secondary work) that I'm doing at the moment is a very much welcomed change and I'm starting to see the changes in shape and see the poundage's go up straight away. I Just don't want my cardio/conditioning to disappear though! So I'll keep the pads and once a week I'll do an MMA style workout Just for maintenance.

agreed. It's good to slow it down every now and then. i think both can compliment each other as long as your not taking the bodybuilder stuff to the extremes of being a Jay Cutler or something like that.

Great posts guys!

And I know Taku still wears those things...who the fuck is he kiddin....gave to his 'sister'

lol

For me it came down to doin a fun lighter routine...ch tri...back bi...leg shoulders

Or not trainin

I am still sore as the volume is taxing my muscles as they are not used to it....but the lighter weight at increased volume is not aggravatting my injuries

What is your routine like? I haven't trained like that in years. I seem to have a lot of problems recovering from bodybuilding routines so I'm always curious to see what routines work well for people. Phone Post

Nothing wrong with mixing it up. If I am having a bad day at the gym and cant hit my weights, I just hit a bunch of volume on isolated body parts. Sometimes it feels good just getting a pump on.
