Do you ever get discouraged when you see really young kids competing? Like does it ever make you feel as though you dont really have a chance to make it big, if you started later?
ttt
i know what you mean
I'm newly turned 18, and just started training, and feel like i started entirely too late....
A negative attiutude is always your worst enemy
I'm 33 been training specifically for mma for about 12 years and I get hopefull when I see 13cyear olds at the gym. Makes me believe that this sport is more than just a fad. I will be elated when they start kickin my ass. In the meantime I'm puttin the stamp on em.
Yeah.
its tough...makes you question what it is you're doing, & what happened to lead you here-where you are today.
Life happens. a lot...I mean A LOT of shit gets in the way sometimes & it seems like you get/got derailed & never got back on track.
I hate thinking "what could've been". I really, really, fuckin hate it.
I'm still trying, & making progress toward my goals albeit much slower than I would like, so I haven't given up, but its tough to justify sticking with it sometimes.
You have to get your priorities straight, imo. Are you doing MMA/BJJ for fun or are you doing it to be a world champion. If you're doing the former, worrying about some hot new young stud is a waste of time and energy.
Compete with yourself and enjoy the process. As long as you can kick your ass from last year, that's progress.
doesn't matter if it is MMA, any other sport, or anything else (no matter what the field of activity) for that matter. the brutal truth is that most of us are not going to be champions.
does that mean we shouldn't do it?
Kirik isn't a world champion fighter (still better than I'll ever be) but I'm damn glad he carried on.
Cus d'Amoto (sp?) wasn't a champ, but I'm damn glad he carried on.
Same with Geoff Thomson, Alex and Paul of London Shoot, Dan Inosanto, etc.
There are so many ways to make a huge contribution than to hold a strap.
Just want to say that to those who have held a strap, you have my respect too
yix

Liyon said it perfectly, IMO.
