The Library of Congress has a whole section of audio online from former slaves. In the 30's as a lot of them started to die off, or getting close, the government started hiring people to interview them. The audio recording are fascinating and certainly worth taking the time to listen to.

Fountain Hughes's family lineage says when his(Fountain Hughes) grandad died, he was a house slave for president Thomas Jefferson.

I believe so,  really the only specific thing I remember is him talking about being captured and doing time in the prison in Md.  and seeing Lincoln iirc.


 

When you do the math you realize this shit wasn't that long ago. 

When you consider how relatively recent this all was it starts to clarify why some things are the way they are today...
