seems like this would be a big disadvantage in that it would be slow and would be easy to break your knuckles.
why does fedor do it?
he is a natural puncher and would probably hit harder if he punched like a boxer.
more power and range. also the style is unorthodox which works in your advantage to be different
fedor and igor use it because they are both relatively short heavyweights.
You can break your knuckles the "orthodox" way as is evident by it happening ALL THE TIME. I think you are making the wrong connection on that.
When you cast you can actually trace the moving target. As you may know in Boxing, a good maxim is to punch where he's going, not where he's at. When you cast you travel on a wave or an arc as opposed to in a "straight" line. You can adjust the path of an arc or wave enough to follow a target that moves, and can't do it as much when straight punching.
Try it for yourself. Have your partner use head movement and go slow. Cast your punches and follow his head. As you punch at the target and it moves, you can alter the trajectory in a minor way, but PERHAPS enough to still land.

Didn't that style of punching come from the old Irish bareknuckle days. I remember reading that it was a way to punch without a gloved hands and not break your knuckles.
I could be wrong though!
What Aug said, plus: with a "boxing" punch, you get hit once per punch, when "casting" you can strike several times with the same blow (fist, elbow, shoulder, elbow, backfist).

You are, its the opposite
Fedor's punching style is sport specific, you need to be wearing gloves.
There wasnt much punching to the face and head in the bare knuckle days, the old timers in boxing will tell you that period was 'the lost art of body punching'

LOL @ a UGer needing instructional videos. If anything, Fedor should be on this thread asking for our help.
it's the lost art of making someone shit their liver out in the morning
Savate has a similar style of punch called the 'swing' which has got to be the worst way to punch someone I can think of. It is useful however (as is casting) to set up something else.
The problem with using it in a boxing situation is that it's not a leagal strike (not with the allowed part of the glove) and it's so freakin' wide that all but the slowest fools can counter with a jab or hook.
If you land one, even if it's not strong, your opponent is often like "wtf was that?" thinking you threw a massive overhand that they didn't quite block, so they tend to lean back or if they're doing the crazy monkey thing, bring their hands back higher which leaves their body open if you want to feint.
If you can time someone with it they're either giving you a free left hook or an underhook if you step into it (which is better defense, IMO).
Then again, if they're good at it, it's another strange punch that comes at you form all sorts of weird places and it hard as hell to defend without leaving something else open.
casting is effective because it's a deceptive punch. Level change, angled and is lead with the head. Opponents have a tendency to focus on your seemingly unprotected head and get caught as their attention is elsewhere and don't see the punch coming. Works well to set up the double leg or body lock. (ie. fedor vs. Nog)
Its great for linking into clinches.
But needs to have almost all punches thrown hard to be effective. You gotta really have good reflexes too because you hands wont be up to catch the punches.
