F tax season and the US government

“We’re gonna deploy you to Korea away from your family for a year and not going to give you tax free status... Oh, and when you come back we’re gonna charge you for the privilege.”

Fuck the thieving government and the liberals who want to raise my taxes even higher!

Korea “isn’t a combat zone” despite us still being officially and technically at war, and despite bullets going across the DMZ on semi-regular occasion.

Such horseshit.

Those depolyed shouldn’t be taxed at all

Why not?

Those in combat zones working in grave danger should not be taxed I agree, and they aren't.

I think returning combat veterans should receive special tax status and taxed at much lower rates, with a a higher threshold resulting in an effective 0% tax rate.

That being said, outside of troops in combat, the military is a huge machine that people chose to join. The travel is not a surprise. It is known before hand.

Yes but Korea is not an active combat zone. You would qualify for family seperation pay while there though.

Yes, any time you are forced to be away from your family for more than 30 days. And like Housing and sustinance allowances it is not taxed.

Oh... I was confused. OP said he was charged for the privelage, not compensated for his services.

If you are married or have a kid. If you don't you just get the shaft of spending a year in korea.

Civilians get their bonus and variable comp taxed at 40%.

They took away my BAS and gave me $150 a month for family separation... Sorry but $50 a month to be away from my family and then owing money come tax time doesn’t even come close to evening out.

No they dont.  Those are taxed at your marginal rate.
