FBI stats show violent crime down; gun sales spike over I-594

Yesterday’s release by the FBI of the 2013 Uniform Crime Report showing fewer homicides involving firearms than in 2012 came too late to have any impact on the outcome of the election last week, but passage of Initiative 594, the 18-page gun control measure funded by billionaires and Seattle-area elitists is having one significant impact: spiking gun sales.

According to KREM in Spokane, gun sales in that city have been soaring since passage of the initiative last Tuesday. Alan Gottlieb, chairman of the Bellevue-based Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms, told Examiner that “it’s always like this after some kind of gun control law is passed.”

“People are buying guns,” Gottlieb said. “We can thank Nick Hanauer for the gun sales.”

Hanauer is one of a handful of billionaires who largely bankrolled the measure, along with support from less affluent but still wealthy – by normal standards – elitists who dumped tens of thousands of dollars into the gun control effort that was also supported by billionaire anti-gunner Michael Bloomberg and his Everytown for Gun Safety lobbying group.

But the FBI report suggests that paranoia about guns may be somewhat misplaced. Last year, homicides were down, with only 8,454 of the nation’s 12,253 murders committed with firearms. Of those, only 285 were committed with rifles, another 308 with shotguns and 5,782 with handguns. Significantly, the number of people stabbed to death far exceeded the number of people killed with long guns, and so were there more people beaten, choked and stomped to death than were shot with rifles or shotguns.

In 2012, there were 12,765 homicides, of which 8,855 were committed with firearms, the FBI report for that year revealed. That’s a far cry from the often-claimed “30,000 gun violence victims” offered up by gun prohibitionists to push their anti-rights agenda. The sad fact is that the majority of gun-related fatalities each year are due to suicides, which are conveniently lumped in with homicides by anti-gunners to gin up the statistics, thus creating the impression that tens of thousands of people are murdered with firearms annually.

Last year, the FBI said, Washington reported 160 homicides, down from 180 reported in 2012 and about par with the 162 who were slain in 2011. Considering that the number of concealed pistol licenses increased by more than 56,000 last year, that seems to put more of a lie to the contention that more legally-armed citizens translates to more murders.

On Wednesday, Nevada anti-gunners are planning to drop off petitions for that state’s background check initiative effort, at the Clark County Registrar of Voters office. Nevadans for Background Checks is using the same rhetoric as the Washington Alliance for Gun Responsibility did here to sell I-594. Now that the Washington experience has provided anti-gunners with a campaign blueprint, expect this to spread like a malignant cancer.

Scientific data doesn't matter to religious zealots.

Every single day I have bought a gun, I didn't get raped.

Bloomberg is raging over this report

slanted article is stupidly slanted.

For example, the quote: "In 2012, there were 12,765 homicides, of which 8,855 were committed with firearms, the FBI report for that year revealed. That’s a far cry from the often-claimed “30,000 gun violence victims” offered up by gun prohibitionists to push their anti-rights agenda."

Uh, perhaps because about 22,000 people were victims of other types of gun violence, perhaps? Shootings, armed robberies, etc? Oh, that would make too much fucking sense!

One of the conspiracy theories I half-believe is that gun control politicians are being payed off by the gun manufacturers. Every time any noise is made about it whatsoever, they make $Texas.

This would be true but why as a business owner would I put all my eggs in one basket per say? I would be shooting myself in the foot if this were the case and a bill passed banning any type of service or product I sell. As a business model this does not work. Maybe it is just paranoia because people are seeing states such as Maryland and Connecticut banning weapons and are afraid their constitutional right to own a gun is being compromised.
