Fedor is Mr. Sambo, where are the leg locks

just an honest question/discussion. as i understand it, sport sambo specializes and focuses on a variety of leg locks. anyone surprised he doesn't go for these types of locks, or are they too low percentage/high risk (for his level/size of opponents) to try to go for a kneebar, heel hooks, etc? in pride, ive definitely seen moments where they were a possibility.

that ankle lock against aoki in the exhibition match was sweet!

"they too low percentage/high risk (for his level/size of opponents)"

A good leg lock is a career ender..but they do seem very low percentage.

SAMBO is known for its leglocks mostly because Judo doesn't have them, and BJJ players (some of them) think they are dirty. In SAMBO you tend to specialize in whatever you are best at, so its possible Fedor is just not that much of a leglock guy, although I'm sure he knows them inside and out.

Originally, before it was a sport, the idea in Combat SAMBO was that if you disable an enemys arm they can still fight and run. If you disable his leg he's not going anywhere and its going to take 1 or 2 more guys to come and get him, thus making them targets. This was in the days when trench warfare was still the name of the game, and h2h skills on the battlefield were a lot more relevant then they seem to be today.

edit:I should add that Judo does have leglocks, but they aren't allowed in competition.

Besides that one of Fedors best skills is gnp inside and outside the guard, so why give up position going for a leglock when you can just continue to do damage with strikes.

As I understand leg locks are not really that common in Sambo competition.

if you don't get them, you get beat on...a lot

maybe fedor doesn't want that

Didn't he go for one on Matt Lindland? I have a vague recollection, but it could be my imagination

I only know of Baboo Baby

Fedor's style is to smash them standing and pulls out submissions if he ends up on the ground. It's not his priority.

He takes what's given.

What's funny is the reversal of opinions on leglocks in the BJJ community as of late. Roughly a decade ago they were frowned upon. Now, some of the best leglockers around are coming from a BJJ background.

I know at my school we go over them pretty regularly. It's always mentioned that they aren't allowed in most competitions, but we drill them pretty regularly.

Back in the mid 90's you'd pretty much NEVER see that.

He's a judoka, that's why.

Helio always taught leg submissions....it's the "sport" BJJ guys that later came and called them dirty and whatnot.

I think it's the opposite. In virtually every fight, he takes it to the ground ASAP and doesn't stand any longer than he has to. The third fight with Nog is the only exception I can think of off the top of my head.

I've seen him go for a few but when they don't sink right, he moves out of them quickly because you're in a precarious position.

 Mr. Baboo Baby IMO

He did against Coleman
