I have read that Fedor was taken down to the ground several times by a GJJ practicioner named Ricardo Arona in their MMA fight. He was also taken down to the ground several times by Mark Coleman very quickly.
Considering his high level in Judo/Sambo, doesn't anyone here find this unusual? Judo/Sambo is supposed to have WAY better takedowns than GJJ, yet Arona alledgedly won the takedown battle against him. I can understand Mark Coleman maybe, except Ricardo Arona?
Arona is not a pure BJJ guy. he is one of the best wrestlers in MMA. he was outwrestling Tito in their ADCC match. he was also taking Kerr down in their match, albeit Kerr looked out of shape.
also, Rings doesn't give points for takedowns, they give points for being aggressive (ie. going for the guillotine as the guy goes for the takedown makes you both aggressive)...
Horn took down Couture in Rings, I doubt he would in the UFC.
he didnt outwrestle tito in their match... but he did win. If adcc was scored as a wrestling match tito would have owned.
Arona took him down twice in 15 minutes. Keep in mind, as Sothy mentioned, the different rules and scoring criteria in RINGS, and the fact that that was Fedor's second MMA match, and he was still adjusting his skills.
yeah... huge...
Look at the bjj haters running wild. Arona is a bjj fighter. Yes he does crosstrain but he is bjj first.
When Fedor ground and pound the shit out of someone it is a victory for judo. But when Ricardo gets a takedown he is not a bjj fighter. LOL.
note that I never said that GC (that Arona isn't a bjjer...cause I think that he is a jj, he is just an atypical bjjer in that he would rather pound from in the guard than pass)...also note that when Fedor wins the judo haters do point out that he doesn't use judo to win (referring to his win over Mino)...or that he is secretly tape training in bjj to learn armbars from the guard...
and yeah, personally, I suck at subs, I just like watching throws and MMA...
How accomplished is Ricardo Arona in BJJ and Wrestling? I'm talking about tournaments he's won etc. I've never read anywhere about him competing in Wrestling tournaments.
Arona also outwrestled Dan Henderson in Pride.
Arona is a freak. Same for Belfort. Those guys can be good at any part of fighting IMO.
I heard that Arona really is Vitor Belfort.
the man does fly kicks off the back of utes, he's a freak...
i once heard.. that this guy named mike tyson had a bad day in the ring and got punched a few tmes by a guy who is supposedly a lot weaker.
i also once heard that this football player named joe thiesman once threw an interception.
i once heard that this one fella who was a UFC champion lost a match in the UFC to some 40 year old dude.
oh yea.. i also heard this story once, i know it was a complete lie, or the guy saying it was just stupid, but if i remember right, it went something like "no matter how good you are somebody will always get you or beat you at what you do best. anybody can have a bad day on any given day."
but, then again.. there are people on the UG here that just cant accept that rule in life and assume that everything that happens in these matches validates their every feeling and wantingness in life.
they are pathetic people.
Once again we are back to this idiotic debate. All fighters cross train. No fighters practice in one style anymore. But each of these fighters has a base style.
The style does not win anymore. Fights are not style vs style. They are fighter vs. fighter. The fighter who is best prepared will win.
Because Cro Cop has worked his sprawl is he now a wrestler? Since Randleman KO'ed Mirko is he now a boxer? Because Henderson Ko'ed Murillo is he know a boxer?
All of you fucking retards who do not understand this, get it through your thick skulls.
ALL FIGHTERS CROSSTRAIN.
What's Arona's wrestling background like? Was he ever on Brazil's Olympic team?
No, he just trained w/ Gholar and just excelled.
My style of pimp slap is the best. Undisputed.
Judo/Sambo guys will normally lose takedown battles in gi-less competition with wrestlers. Arona, while recognized for his BJJ, has awesome gi-less takedowns.
Okay, I think we need to talk about crosstraining.
Fedor Crosstrains Judo for MMA, by adding striking and removing the context of sport judo from his skills. But he doesn't do this by training with BJJ guys.
Where as Arona trained BJJ for MMA, but by adding striking and wrestling to his skills by training in each.
