Fight Club Challenge 3 - June 21st Calgary

Fight Club Challenge 3

Welcome to our third edition of the Fight Club Challenge. This event will be held on June 21st, at 6404 Bowness Road NW, Lower Level. The entrance is at the back.

For this edition, we will make a few changes:

-Weigh-ins will be held on Friday, June 20th, between 5:30 and 8:30 PM, as well as Saturday, June 21st, between 10 AM and 12 Noon.

-Kids need to be registered by 10:30 AM, Saturday, June 21st, and will start competing at 11 AM just after the rules meeting.

-There will be a rules meeting for the adults at 12 Noon, and the competition will start soon after. Adults will start with the Gi divisions first. The rules are standard BJJ rules, 5 minutes time limit. We will allow straight ankle locks and knee bars.

- The Gi Absolute will follow the Gi weight classes.

- The no-Gi division will start immediately after the Gi Absolute is finished. Same rules apply for the no-Gi division as for the Gi division.

-Once again, the absolute Gi and no-Gi divisions will have no time limit and no points, but there will be fouls awarded in case of inactivity. Fouls will be handed out at the discretion of the referee if there is no action or one of the competitors is not locking up the match. Five fouls and you lose.

-3 pts for 1st place, 2 pts for 2nd place & 1 pt for 3rd. Points are cumulative and at the end of the year, the top 8 competitors will be invited to compete for a grand prize of $500.00 for the Gi and $500.00 for the no-Gi division.

-Each winner will also be awarded 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place medals for their efforts as well as trophies in the open weight divisions.

-Weight categories are 200lbs and over, 180-200lbs, 160-180lbs, 160lbs and under. This is just a guide and may change the day of competition.

Last time we had a great time, let's do it even better this time.

Entry fee is only $30.00 for all divisions.

Do you lump all the kids together?

I'm bringing out a group of kids from BDB Martial Arts to compete and am planning on competing myself. Any other girls thinking of coming out?

Sheila Bird

Defender,

the kids will be divided into 4 categories:

lightweights (7 yrs and under),
midleweights (8-9 yrs),
light-heavyweights (10-11 yrs),
and heavyweights (12-14 yrs).

Now, keep in mind that the kids are a special case. You can't place them in a category strictly according to their weight as kids grow at different rates.

For example, you could have an 8 year old that's the size of a 12 year old. Is it fair to place the 8 year old along with kids that are 12 and 13? I'd say no since the 12 year olds would have an unfair advantage when it comes to motor skills.

By the same token, it wouldn't be fair to place the very large 8 year old against the other regular sized 8 year olds as this kid would have an unfair size and weight advantage. A compromise would have to be made in this case.

On the day of, we will weigh in all the kids, then I will arrange the kids in the specific weight classes, but I will also take into consideration their age and experience.

We may have a fifth category for the kids for the ages 13-15 yrs, depending on the number of kids that show um to compete.

Sheila, at the moment there isn't a specific women's category as there hasn't been any females competing except for the teenage girls. You are welcome to compete in the men's lightweight divisions and in the open weight divisions.

As the tournament grows and we atract more and more people, I hope to build a competitive women's category.

Further to the questions on the kids division, the kids will compete with the Gi.

Time limits:

There will be 2 mins. time limit for the lightweights,
3 mins. for the midleweights,
4 mins for the light-heavyweights,
and 5 mins. for the heavyweights.

Submissions:

There will be NO neck cranks and NO leg locks of any kind.

For the lightweights, Gi chokes and straight arm-bars only.

For the midleweights we will allow Gi and rear naked chokes, and straight arm-bars only.

For the light-heavyweights, Gi and rear naked chokes, Guilloutine chokes, and straight arm-bars.

For the heavyweights, Gi and rear naked chokes, guilloutine chokes, straight arm-bars and twisting arm-bars such as Americana and Kimura locks.

Keep in mind that these rules are here to protect the kids and any infraction will result in disqualification.

The main objective for the kids is to see them going home with a huge smile on their face and feeling good about themselves.

We will keep score throughout the year. 3 pts for 1st place, 2 pts for 2nd and 1 pt for 3rd. At the end of the year, the top scoring kids in each division will be awarded trophies.
