Fight fixing and tampered gloves in Edmonton?

TAMPERED GLOVES DEBACLE SHOULD HAVE EARNED PAT REID A LIFETIME COMBAT SPORTS BAN

In 2012 a senior group of Edmonton Combative Sports Commission officials lodged a complaint against Executive Director Pat Reid for a number of concerning regulation decisions, including one he made on October 6, 2011 that could have ended tragically.

According to the complaint, Reid allowed Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou to take his tight fight gloves back to his hotel for the night following MFC 31 weigh-ins so he could "stretch them out a bit"  for his MFC light-heavyweight  title fight with then-champ Ryan Jimmo the following night. Concerned ECSC technical officials attempted to stop the Team Quest Fighter from leaving with the gloves, but were thwarted by Reid who was oblivious that he was breaching the Unified Rules and City of Edmonton ordinance that requires the commission to use new unaltered gloves for every bout it sanctions.

Photos of Sokoudjou's gloves from the fight show that they were dramatically modified.

The pics definitely look shady. Someone call detective shields! Phone Post 3.0

FYI, Jimmo's gloves didn't have that odd thumb loop Sokoudjou's did.

So why the fuck didn't the ECSC make him change before the fight? Knowing or not Reid or team quest isn't at fault, the buck stops at ECSC.

I'm not sure what modification the glove has from the picture? Has it been modified for comfort or is it something more. Did they check after the fight? I can't imagine it was anything more than altering for comfort. They KNEW he was taking them, awful ballsy to do anything dastardly when there was a possibility of being checked the next day. Because Reid overruled the decision. He helped rewrite the city's governing bylaw to give him absolute power over the commission and its officials. The reason for the change was that the commission members were going to vote for his removal in 2009 after he was caught drinking at an event and had been caught lying to the commission on more than one occasion.

Reid's inside man that hired him suspended the chair who was the deciding vote. A preliminary email tally showed a 4-3 split between commission members, two of whom were also caught drinking with Reid at the event and were also up for discipline. The third vote in his favor came from a commissioner he gave a paid gig to when she relinquished her position to one of Reid's friends (which is also a breach of several code of conduct sections). He also took her to Vegas for a UFC event on the city's dime.

The four commissioners who were to vote for Reid's firing were systematically removed within four months of the complaint being registered about him and were replaced with Reid's hand-picked cronies who relinquished their decision making power to him.

The corruption runs deep in the ECSC.

MFC doesn't allow you to choose from different styles of gloves. I managed fighters in the past who fought for them.&nbsp;</p>

"Reid's inside man"...."The corruption runs deep in the ECSC."...."Reid's hand-picked cronies"

And now the whole world knows...

Bah, as an Edmontonian it really sucks to see this happening. If it's as black and white as Mike's posts indicate, then hopefully people in the government outside the ECSC who would have power to remove this conflict of interest will act.

That looks like some Panama Lewis type of stuff right there.

Exactly. Made reference to Lewis and Resto's case in the story. Spoke a bit with Jimmo about it today too. We're going to chat more at length about it after his fight this weekend. A lot of this was news to him.

No penalty for Sokoudjou? Phone Post 3.0

One thing is certain. That guy has absolutely no business running a commission over seeing tiddlywinks much less combat sports. Phone Post 3.0

The gloves look doctored on the sides and with the thumb. They also don't look as thick on top of the hand but hard to tell from the angles in the pictures. Phone Post 3.0

Still trying to determine who doctored the gloves, which may never happen. Reid is the person who overrode the city bylaw and Unified rules and allowed the gloves to be removed from the required commission chain of custody. Current ecsc officials who were there can verify. Ignorance is no excuse for breaking such an important rule. Phone Post
