Here is something that I've thought about for a long time and I'm curious what others think.
How about this...Basically let's uncomplicate everything. 10 point must..half points..fuck all that. All split decisions and close fights should be draws. A dominant performance, KO, sub, etc. should be rewarded with a win. Re-do the pay structure and reward the fighters heavily for wins, and penalize them heavy for draws. No fighter wants a bunch of draws on their record, and everyone wants to make as much $$ as possible.
Thoughts?
A card with 7 draws on it would be great for the sport.
Also..If it was set up like this, and the pay was better for a loss, than a draw, I think it could encourage fighters to open up their game more, and take more chances.

I think after awhile this wouldn't be a problem. What you just said is the problem we have now, only there is a fucking coin toss by the judges to pick a winner.
Why don't we simply educate the fans into understanding that in the real world not all fights end in spectacular knockout's.

So by your logic, you think the fights now are ok, and the answer is educating fans?

That is exactly what needs to be done. You have some bad fights here an there. But fights like - Shogun v Hendo which are close fights, by your logic, both Fighters would be penalized?!

This! Thank you for some Logic Sir :)

did 148 hurt the sport? it had 8.
I think all the tools are there. Judges need to learn all aspects of mma and start using 7s and 8s... The way it's currently scored, they're pretty much just seeing who won more rounds regardless of margin.
There were some recent changes to the judging criteria. Hopefully those get implemented and we'll see what comes of it.
MMAFAN695 - If only I can maipulate Zuffa's database to see what every fighter's record would look like if all decisions were turned into draws...
Chael: 11 Wins, 11 Losses, 17 Draws
The Lombard fight I can understand people complaining about it being a boring but I actually can't understand fight fans that just don't compute or understand the technical fighting that went on in the Faber vs barao fight fopr example.
people actualy complaining about Barao showing to much emotion for his victory....really...has it come down to this now? are all decision wins a sign of weakness?
Man ...some people really need to study boxing or even Muaythai history and realize how many genuine bad asses have acquired serious status and respect for beating other serious bad ass fighters for decision wins.
MMA fans need to start enjoying all the finer aspects and details of a fight and not just think that ko's or the actual submissions is all that ever matters.
Example,
I would rather watch a display of great grappling where both fighters are exchanging awesome positions and near submission, instead of seeing a guy jump into a guillotene and end the fight within seconds of the fight starting but that's just me.
I also enjoy watching a fight between two great strikers where strategies abound....Example Machida karate against a well known kickboxer like Shogun, regardless of wether there's a knockout or not......don't you?
The sad part is that all MMA fans ever want to watch is a fight ending in spectacular knockout. Most people don't have the patience to watch Machida outpoint somebody else and it's a shame. Most people could not stand or even want to watch somebody like Anderson silva outstrike or outpoint another great fighter and actually view it as a weakness....what a shame.......
In boxing circles, atleast back in the day die hard fight fans understood striking strategies....the boxer against the puncher. unfortunately in MMA all people want to see is the puncher against the puncher and anybody moving lateral or backwards is viewed as a coward.

So what's your plan of action for this fan education process? How do you plan on educating millions of ignorant (when it comes to fighting) fight "fans"?
Also, this still doesn't address the current problem of point fighting. So by your logic we should just educate millions of ignorant fans as to the sweet science of point fighting?

Great points. However, I do have some issue with the points. There is a difference between winning by points while having the intent of doing damage and finishing vs. trying to game the scoring system and win by pts without such attempt... I think this is where most of the justified criticism of the Jackson camp comes from.

There's a huge difference between a couple of guys going out, throwing down hard, and going to a decision, and these point fighting matches that have become very common in the UFC.
All I am saying is that a big majority of the casual fight fans don't understand all the finer details of the fight game and don't really apreciate it.
Example, the casual "Tour de france" viewer is only interested in bike crashes and people throwing nails on the road. Most are not interested in racing or it's team strategies but the die hard fans sure are.

I hear you and I agree. The problem with that is that we live amongst total idiots, and there is no way to fix that. Want clear cut proof of this, that is relevant to the fight world? "Pro wrestling" is more popular than MMA. With that being said, it's impossible to "educate" the masses because it simply doesn't matter to them.
Now for those of us that train and/or are respectable, educated fans...we need to fix what's really broken, and that's the point fighting that has been getting so popular over the years. You feel me?
The answer is stop having 97% of the rounds being scored 10-9.
Right now a round where one fighter clearly won is being scored the same as a round where one fighter barely did more than another fighter.
Duecedroppin,
I Agree, about pointfighting, as long as people can distinquish the difference between avoiding and not wanting to engage and lateral movement and effectively trying to box or outstrike someone.
It's a fine line(i know) but there really is a difference and Im just not So sure All fans understand it.
Another example,
Famous boxers
Pernell witaker
Sugar ray leonard
Andre ward
Floyd Mayweather
All win or have won many decisions in the past and have been praised for their technical boxing skills.
Can We do the same or have We ever done the same with any of the best technical strikers that MMA has Ever known? I doubt it.
I Cant think of Anyone fighter being praised for winning a decision ever. Oh Yeah ,when Aldo beat hominick We crucified him for not finishing a game hominick and somehow elaborated that aldo was slipping and not the fighter everyone thought he was.
How Many people Here have praised barão for his excellent win over Faber?
Not many and Thats My point.
