Johannesburg (South Africa) - DRC born Booto Guylain, the veteran of two MMA bouts in the EFC AFRICA Hexagon, passed away late this afternoon due to injuries sustained in his bout on February 27.

Guylain suffered a serious head injury during his Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) bout at EFC AFRICA 27 last Thursday. Immediately after the bout he was stabilised by the on-site medical team and transported to hospital where he was treated for swelling and bleeding on the brain.

Guylain received care from one of South Africa’s top neuro-surgical teams but tragically passed away today.

"We are devastated," said EFC AFRICA president Cairo Howarth. "This is a huge loss to the sport and to all who know him. Our thoughts are with his family in this trying time."

Fatal injuries are extremely rare in the sport of MMA due to the emphasis on safety. Unfortunately, head trauma is sometimes a reality and very rarely fatalities can occur.

ONEPLAN, EFC AFRICA's disability partner since October 2013, will be providing financial support to Guylain's family.

“We are very grateful that ONEPLAN is here in this difficult time, and we thank them for their support,” said Howarth.

Guylain was 29 years old. He is survived by his wife and son. All athletes competing at EFC AFRICA 28, on March 27, will wear black armbands in his honour and memory.

"Actually, mixed martial arts is huge in South Africa right now," he said. "There’s a show down there now that I just heard about that is doing 1.2 million viewers every time it’s on. So the sport is booming all over the world, and yeah, South Africa is next. That’s where we’re going."

The show he is referring to, Extreme Fighting Championship, has so far produced 14 events. According to a news report, a recent March event drew 1.6 million viewers -- 25.9 percent of the television audience -- a rating that beat popular sports like rugby and cricket.

There have been others before but I think this may be the first pro fighter. This is without question the highest profile MMA organization to have a death resulting from a fight.

The other deaths in MMA weren't related to brain damage suffered in the fight though, correct? I remember a couple dying and the reports coming back that it was from preexisting issues, similar to when someone goes down playing basketball Phone Post 3.0

Sam Vasquez

"Vasquez's death was officially ruled as a death due to complications of blunt trauma of the head with a subdural hemorrhage.[2] Vasquez is the first fighter to die from injuries sustained in sanctioned mixed martial arts competition in North America."

also Michael Kirkham passed away due to subarachnoid hemmorrhage of the brain.

Sad. I feel bad for the guy that beat him to death.

Was there anything in the TKO that was out of the ordinary, or was this just a freak occurance?

I was watching the event that day but they didn't air all of the prelims. At the post fight presser they mentioned that he was in ICU. Definitely interested in seeing if something occured out of the ordinary.

That is absolutely terrible, RIP. My thoughts and prayers will be with the family. What a devastating loss... and fairly peculiar, IMO. I am wondering if the details may change when more information becomes available... regardless, Rest In Peace. Phone Post 3.0

Is there a video of the fight? Phone Post 3.0

^not meant in a disrespectful manner. Just meant to see if the tko was anything out of the ordinary. Phone Post 3.0

I don't know anything about this org but it sounds like they had proper medical staff and did everything they could to save this man's life. Phone Post 3.0
