Fighters opinions

I started this thread looking to get some insight from fighters.  As you all may know I am the wife of Frank from #FranksFight  and he is fighting for his life.

We have had so much support and help from the MMA community and I truly understand why.  Every time Frank agrees to treatment he is starring in his own main event.  The treatment Frank endures for testicular cancer is equivalent to a pay per view main event title fight.  Fighters train hard and long for their upcoming fight hoping to walk away with that win. Since cancer does not tell Frank when his event will happen he never has a chance to prepare or train. Frank has to get into that “fight” mode with little to no notice at all. He walks into the fight however knowing that if he does not win that means his life will end.  Think of all the pressure that is placed on a fighter who is part of a main event.  When Frank agrees to treatment he too signs a contract however his says he could die.  He now has all the pressure of wondering if he made the right decision to take the treatment.  Once he starts treatment there is no turning back and instead of 5, 5 minute rounds he faces months of rounds before hearing the decision.  If the decision is not in his favor he has to decide if he is willing to again agree to a new event. As he lays in the bed with no energy to even speak to me I sit back with many thoughts running through my head.  I happen to be checking The UG as I have not been on other than to copy and paste for a couple of days and it just got me thinking about fighters.

I wonder when you agree to a fight what is it that mentally drives you to win the fight?

If you lose is it easy to just accept another fight or do you have to deal with the loss before moving on?

One last thing I am curious about is if there was no money involved would you continue to fight?

Thanks for your time and any comments.

Hey im sure youll get many different answers. For me I just loved competition. The more physical the better. And generally as soon as my fights over win or lose im anxious to do it again. Id like to be able to fight everyday. And when I started fighting I was making 600 a fight 300 if I lost. between gas and my medical bills and dinner, drinks ect. My weekends of fights would cost me money.Getting paid was always just a bonus for me.

Jerry,

Thanks for your comment. It is nice to understand what it is that makes someone want to fight. Thank you for giving me some insight into a fighters thoughts. I know from what I have learned in my short time here on The UG that many fighters struggle to be able to continue to be part of the sport. Wow amazed to see that you would fight even having to use your own money that tells me you were born to fight. Again thanks for your insight.

Hey there sending love back at you!

What motivates me to win is that u don't want to get hurt or embarrassed. After my losses I have wanted to rebound very quickly, because I always believe I can. Like Jerry said above, if I figure what I spend to train, travel, eat right, supplements etc. I'm in the hole when all is said and done. The money makes it easier, but the money isn't my passion, fighting is. Phone Post 3.0

I am glad you brought up embarrassment. Many would not admit this however it is a reality. Embarrasment can motivate in many ways and I see how it could motivate in this aspect as well. Do you think Passion is enough or does it take more than that? I believe if someone has a very strong passion it can superceeed anything. Thanks for your comment.

Is passion enough for what? To motivate me? Phone Post 3.0

My mother had cancer for a long time when I was a kid, and I've fought a little bit (I've got a green name I just don't have it turned on because I'm not a serious "pro"). I think you have to find every motivation you can whether it's the love of winning, fear of losing or sheer stubborn refusal to let someone or something beat you. A lot of people talk about positivity but it's tough to be positive all the time, sometimes "fuck you, I won't quit" is the best you can manage. Anything is good if it gets you through. Yes do you think passion alone can motivate someone enough to win a fight? I would think if your passion is great enough it could be enough I was just curious on what you thought.

I love your answer. You bring up the word "positivity" which brings up something interesting for me anyway. My hubby and I are told all the time to keep positive thoughts or it will not help however I feel just like you said sometimes it is tough to be positive. Think about fighters who lose multiple times in a row I wonder do they still think positive? I also agree whatever it takes as long as it gets you through. Thanks for your comment
