Fighters that started late?

Which fighters started later in life?

Do you think people can start training MMA in later years and still be successful?

I guess the only person I can think off is Couture?

I've been hearing a lot about the 9 year rule and it seems pretty applicable, you get about 9 years of hard training and competition before your body starts to break down. There's obviously exceptions I.e. Lawler and Arlovski, but I fully believe that any 25-30 year old who can put the time in can be successful it's just a much harder road with longer recovery times. Of course as an aspiring 29 yr old MMA fighter I am a little biased. Phone Post 3.0

Jimi Manuwa started training MMA at 27 in 2007, first fight at 28 in 2008

I think it depends, all those guys mentioned that got late starts were already elite competitors and their skill set in some way, shape, or form are useful in MMA. Take an average joe and start training him from scratch at 25-30 years of age, no way in hell they become elite. Phone Post 3.0
