Fighting shape without running?

Magnus... basically, I say that if you can't get hit in the combat sport, then it should never be called a fight. Good Lord does it bother me at tournies when I hear people referring to their grappling matches as fights. I never hear wrestlers say that, they say "matches".

sfbjj, I just feel that you should be far more concerned with your heart rate, than wether or not your using your legs in these activities. Baisically if you want to be in good fight shape, you should try to lower you RHR, also your max heart rate and finally the amount of time it takes to go from max to mid. This is all my opinion of course. I just read my first post, it came off as rude, I apologize.

HR is going to be based on the efficiency of the muscles used, it's not a systemic thing. The only real systemic addaptation to training is an increase in Red blood Cells. Most training adaptations (for endurance) are localized such as blood vessel proliferation, and mitochondrial density.

no need to apologize.

So your saying that no matter what your HR is going to impove, so you should worry about other things?

I just think you are missing the corolation between HR and Training and it's importance.

airdyne bike(for me at least)

Boxer Juan Diaz says that most of his cardio comes from swimming. Supposedly Rocky Marciano advocated more swimming than running as well.

Marciano ran several miles every morning, even on Christmas day.

"Supposedly Rocky Marciano advocated more swimming than running as well."

I think Marciano recommended shadow boxing in a pool.
