Fans anticipated that someone was going to tap, snap, or nap in Saturday's Alistair Overeem vs. Frank Mir fight. However, a cautious, intelligent Overeem ended up taking a truly one sided unanimous decision.

Overeem's strategy was not particularly fan friendly, but it was smart and effective given that he had lost two in a row. However, it was perhaps not apparent how completely lopsided the fight was until Fight Metric released their report:
Frank Mir attempted 26 punches over 15 minutes, landing five of them, three significant. This of course comes out to one significant punch per five minute round. By contrast Alistair Overeem attempted 157 punches, landing 139, 62 significant.
Frank Mir, 34, has now lost four fights in a row, two by one-side decision, and two by Referee Stops Contest due to strikes. This is a dangerous sport, and Mir has been fighting in it for 13 years. He already needs Testosterone Replacement Therapy, which some research ties to head trauma. He is a former UFC Heavyweight champion, and holds the record for most victories, most submissions, and most fights in the history of the division. To some of his biggest fans, this might be a great time to retire.
After Reem landed that knee in the 1st and Mir did the funky chicken dance ( like he did when JDS KOd him ) The fight should have been stopped. I mean he got destroyed in round 1. But why wouldnt they stop this fight when they stopped the Urijah fight hella early??
Dude landed nothing while dude got landed on all night
How is Dana angry at Overeem? Seriously I don't know what more he could have done. It's hard to fight someone that just doesn't want to fight which Mir clearly didnt
I thought it was a great fight by Overeem, he's been hounded for havaing crappy cardio and being to cocky. He's trying his best to fix both things, this was a complete destruction of Mir.
I think Reem specifically didn't finish Mir because of the curse. Everyone who KO's Mir gets finished in their next fight. However, Cormier recently showed us that if you decision Mir, you can still win your next fight. So now Overeem has a chance to avoid the curse and keep his job!
I thought The Reem was smart when he needed to be. Clearly dominated Mir without taking risks. And I don't blame him since his job was on the line. He entertained also. Good fight.
I'm really not a fan of these articles: they're completely skewing the facts to favor one point of view.
It says Mir landed one significant strike per round while Alistair landed 62 in total. It would make sense to separate the strikes between ground strikes and standing strikes. It also says that Mir attempted 26 strikes and Alistair threw 159, but Alistair threw only a handful of strikes on the feet.
On top of that, the other post pointing out "Thumb is up". Maybe there should be another post discussing how putting your thumb up doesn't constitute intelligently defending yourself. It's like trying to argue the application of the rules when you don't even know the rules.
I thought Reem did a good job tonight. He didn't come out in bezerker mode and gas in under two minutes. If he continues to train like he did for this fight, and keep up his cardio I think he can have some legendary fights. He executed his game plan and shut down Mir. As a fan though, I wanted to see him put together more combos, and leg kicks. The guy has so many tools but rarely do we see them put together in one fight. Who's up next for the Reem?
Wasn't impressed with Reem or Mir. Don't know what Mir's game plan was but it was horrible. Having James McSweeney in your corner giving you any advice probably didn't help. There was one point in second round where Mir was on top and could have stayed on top of Reem for rest of round while delivering GNP but he decided to go for a choke which Reem easily got out of and ended up on top of Mir. Reem wasn't very good either and anyone thinking he all of a sudden found great cardio after all these years is crazy. He hardly did anything for 3 rounds to warrant this new found cardio, I will pass judgement on this when he's actually in a fight for 3 rounds and see how his cardio is then.
Ronin 7 - I thought Reem did a good job tonight. He didn't come out in bezerker mode and gas in under two minutes. Well Reem seems to want a gimme fight with Lesnar so I don't think he has his mind set on anyone in top of division. Reem vs JDS would make the most sense but I don't think it's good for Reerm's health to take that fight.
Every fighter should strive to consistently put on a performance like Overeem did. To completely dominate your opponent on the feet and ground and get by with only taking 5 strikes in 15 minutes will ensure a long career.
Man I love Diego but to have your brain mushed and face destroyed every fight? No thanks.
