Ok i have finally built up the courage and im going to go training on Monday at a place in bristol, ill be taking the MMA class.
I have never trained before in my life and im very unfit, so obviously my skill level is going to be poor and my cardio is even worse than my skill level so what can i expect other than a slow painful death?
I'm very nervous already as i don't know whats going to happen, i think i will just about make it through the warm up and thats if they don't do the speed rope as i cannot jump rope 2 save my life..... so god only knows how i will survive the whole session.
I believe ill be the only porker there and be the only one dragging behind the rest lol
On top of my poor cardio and michelin man appearance ill be nervous so will prob end up forgetting to breathe, as if this was not enough i have eczema on my foot and will have to wear a varuka sock which in case you don't know is a rubber sock lol and i have a dodgey knee but luckily i have a knee brace.
Can anyone fill me in on what to expect?
I think ill be going to a place called the sweatbox, has anyone heard of it or ever trained there that can put my mind at ease?
Or will you take this opportunity to push an already nervous human being over the edge.
Any martial arts school I've ever gone to, whether it be Traditional Martial Arts, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, or MMA has all had a mixture of people who were in shape and people who are "porkers" as you call it.
Everybody sucks when they first start and no matter how well you think your cardio is, you still tire out the first few weeks you do it.
Just do it as often as you possibly can and you will be amazed how quickly the bodyfat melts off your body and how quickly your endurance/stamina improves.
Yeah, im hoping the guys there are decent bunch of lads and there ain't to many idiots training there.
Is is custom to give the new guy a tough first lesson to see how serious they are and can i expect practical jokes and holds being held on longer than necessary?
I'm ready to get smashed around for the whole session, sparring should be interesting considering i ain't had a fight since i was 13. How hard can i go in sparring?
the first thing you'll need to learn is how to approach training. It's training, and not fighting. Give it your all, but leave your ego out of it. In the beginning, probably for about 3-6 months you're going to get your ass kicked hard by nearly everyone.
This is crucial to your training because it builds heart and work ethic. Part of fighting is knowing how to take an ass kicking.
Stick with it, train with the BEST guys, ask them loads of questions, and make friends. Be cool to people, dont try to be a tough guy.
You will one day in a few months notice that you've caught onto something when you give your first great performance, and it'll be one of the best feelings in the world.
i just did my first class last night and it was awesome. you feel great afterwards, even though i got my ass handed to me in the 5min rolling sessions. really sore with a ton of bruises this morning, but it was exhilerating
However hard you want to get hit. If you spar one of the more experienced guys in the gym, they'll probably match your level. If you start off throwing light and then somewhere in the middle start swinging for the fences, expect to get wrecked.
Frankly, your first couple of classes at least, work on form more than strength. Don't be a punk and try to hurt someone; if you're working on learning, people are generally very helpful - if you're working on trying to show off your "strength".... not such a good ending.
Go in with a positive attitude that you are there not only to learn mma but to better yourself through training and a willingness to learn, and the people there will be very helpful and encouraging. (This is assuming a decent school)
After the warmup you will be exhausted. Your trainging, and sparring if you do will be very tough. Don't worry, just do what you can even though it may be slow and sloppy. Do not quit, you dont have to feel like you you have to go all out, just go at whatever speed and strength you can do and concentrate on performing the technique right, no matter how slow or bad it looks. Pratice practice...
Ok i was intending on going light as i don't fancy getting totally destroyed in my first lesson, ill try and learn as much as i can from the guys i spar with.
What kind of stuff goes on during a typical mma class from start to end cause atm im not to sure what to expect or prepare for.
Do they do everything or focus on one thing per session? And what sort of cardio work outs are commonly used before the real training begins?
I don't fancy getting totally fucked in the first part before the real training and learning comes into it.
Some of your comments are getting me pumped ready to go.
the mma class at our school lasts for about an hour n 15 min...first we stretch, then we hit the pads to warm up, usually hand combos then hand+leg combos...then its usually some type of clinch/judo work or takedown/sprawl work...after that its either learn a new technique on the ground and then roll, or work on some stand-up and spar a few rounds, every class ends with at least 10 min straight rolling
Thrill do you ever get pissed of having to train with rookies such as myself?
I meen id suck at holding the pads and doing most things as a team cause i ain't done that before, i imagine my total lack of experience and being new to the game would effect my partners training also in a negative way.
lol KCC i was 265 lbs and managed to get down to 191 lbs but over the past month ive gone up to 216 lbs even after losing all the weight i feel much better and can move faster but i still get tired perhaps more now than i did before.
If i wasn't so god damn unfit i wouldn't worry as much about going.
not really, but mostly because i havent fought yet, but i spar with all the fighters outside of class, so when i go with the newer people i can really try n work technique when im not so worried about not gettin nailed in the face or not gettin triangled every 15 seconds...also pad wise, only the people that have been there for awhile hold the pads...they might match you up with someone newer as well...basically its just what everyone said, dont be a spaz and dont think ur billy badass...think of it this way...ur goin to a football practice, actually fighting is a football game...in practice you tackle, but not with bad intentions and nothin outrageous
GixXeR you're going to LOVE it! The first time I went out to train was awesome. I got my ass handed to me the entire time and loved it. I even threw up a couple of times after class. I felt so energized and pumped that I was instantly addicted (one year ago, wish I would've started alot earlier) Expect alot of bruising in the upcoming weeks/months! As far as weight loss, when I started I was 240 lbs and now I'm about 185, it's been excellent.
Just go in with a positive attitude, don't be afraid to ask questions if you don't understand something and above all, have a good time and remember to tap.
My MMA classes usually start with a good warmup of running, abs and stretching (like previously mentioned you'll be beat after the warmup) then it's some focus mit work and combinations, boxing and kickboxing (switching up with your partner) then some sparring (mainly incorporating what you've just learned into the mix). After that we do some wrestling (practice takedowns and sprawling drills). This is followed by Some BJJ and then about 10 - 15 minutes rolling at the end. Total class is usually about an 1:30 to 1:45 minutes and always good times.
