The very 1st fight at the 1st UFC event ever. It lasts just 25 seconds, after which there is total confusion as to whether the fight will go on. This is one of many times during the night that the referee seemed to have no idea what he was doing. Luckily, Big John McCarthy was hired from UFC 2 on.

It wasn't really the referee's fault.
They had very limited power. I don't believe they were allowed to stop a fight without the fighter or their corner stopping it.
So they could fight to the death if the corner didn't stop it?

thats why they canned that ref anf got bjm (royces training partner!)
the ref and all of us watching along with Wallace, Long and Brown, had no idea what to expect. That being said, I think the kick to the mouth and follow-up punch was the worst damage the ref had ever seen? and didn't he know how to handle it. Had he reffed any kinds of fighting before?
