Flavio Canto - how good?

JuDok@,

What rank are you in bjj? Do you compete?

fit4judo,

this footage you speak of is intriguing.

JuDoK@,

if you are as tough to tap as your screen name is to type, both you and Flavio must be awesome.

Thanks for the info.

purple in bjj... yes i compete.... I do fairly well in bjj.... I like judo comps much more though.

Top. I'd love to hear more about the guy as well.

Greg

ashy, i'll drop Flavio a line to ask him about his BJJ grade and competition experience, i'll keep you updated.

Saw Canto compete at NY Open last year. His judo is awesome, and like Josh said, he is super-slick on the ground, won the finals with this nifty choke while he had his opponent pinned.

Also, he seems to be doing pretty good this year - I see that he took gold at several events on the European circuit.

There was a neat short clip about him on Fox Sports TV after the Athens Olympics. It showed him training in Brazil at this club for disadvantaged kids. It said he comes from a well-to-do background and he gave up a career (in law??? not sure) to focus on judo and that winning Olympic bronze was great as now he could get more sponsors for the club and help the poor kids. I saw this on TV in Asia as well as here in the US.

Jsho,
You do that, and I'll buy you a......a......HOUSE!!!!

Thanks, that is supernice of you.

I spoke to a Canadian National Team guy who fought Flavio in the NY Open. He stated that he beat everyone, except one, with newaza. He pinned the guy in question. This guy just rolled his eyes at the mention of Flavio's skill level.

Imagine if the IJF simply said, "let's give every ground exchange just alittle more time," or "as long as someone is simply attacking, we'll let it go"

Kashiwazaki, Flavio (I'm calling him by his first name now), Buchanon (GBR) Mike Swain etc. would all be multiple World and Olympic medallists,or champions. AND, most of us would be alot happier. Well somewhat happier. It'll take more than the IJF to solve my ex-wife issue.

Happy then Sad,
Glenn

i heard about flavio's youth-poverty judo program. from what i understand, it is in the shittiest part of Rio (i think its Rio) you can imagine. complete 3rd world ghetto the likes of which hasnt been seen in the USA since any of us were alive.

what really sad about it is that this area is right next to one of the wealthiest areas in all of Brazil yet the people there do pretty much nothing to help whatsoever.

The old "do onto others" goes out the window. Unless, of course, the roles were reversed. The once rich, now impoverished man would love some help, and wouldn't understand why no one is giving it.

I shouldn't whine though. I have several friends who have spend most of their adult lives living in ghettos and slums, helping the poor. I have a friend in Senegal right now. What a tough gig!

first of all, the rio slums have a higher gun death rate than baghdad....

flavio works with people from the city of god and rocinha.... these are dangerous areas but normal parts of life in rio...

he is a sports star there and those are really, really respected there in that country... it makes them forget about their shitty situation.... but don't feel bad for the brazilians who live in the favela b/c they are probably more happy and lively than all of us on this site...

proprs to flavio for doing the judo thing for the poor.... it just sux that it costs so much to be competitive in the judo circuit.... hopefully if he finds some major talent, they can get some funding for him/her.

More information on Flavio's project can be found here:

I went to visit the class he does in Rocinha a couple of times when I was training in Barra last year. On one occasion the security guards wouldn't let anyone into the building, so he held the class on the pavement outside :o)

dble post, doh.

Flavio

is all that and a bag of chips (healthy ones). The past few times I have
been to Rio he has taken me with him out to the project (that is the
proper name BTW). This is his heart and soul. The kids down there you
better pray they don't get enough money to travel, because these kids
are bad asses one and all. Their newaza is technically better then a vast
majority of people I know that do judo at high levels. This speaks
volumes for those that teach these kids - ohhhhhh did I happen to
mention that there are like 600 kids involved here throughout the day?
Many props to Flavio for his efforts in this project. If you want an
interview with him or him to do a feature in Brasil - you donate a nice
sum to the project. How many top guys do you see doing this? Not to
many.

As to his newaza ability - beyond badass would not even come close. I
have rolled with many of the best and hung loser tags on many, but
not on him (damn it - gonna have to try again). I would truly love to
see a roll between Flavio and Camarillo. That would be a total badass
roll to watch.

David

Does anyone have any clips of Flavio competing?

how often has any of the Newaza specialist guys ever met in competition and won by submission?

hey ashy, Flavio is, obviously, awesome on the ground given his credentials and what people have seen (I remember watching him completely outclass his Russian opponent at the 2003 worlds)...he's awesome.

However, if more newaza time was given, those people he easily beats on the ground would work on their newaza more. Kosei's newaza is said to be amazing (according to Rhadi Ferguson, etc.), but he isn't Flavio level...but if judo had more ground time, I bet he would be.

if a 4-point shot existed in basketball, more people would work on their long-range jumper. Same thing here...

however, Flavio is SO much fun to watch. Smooth at both standing and ground work, so a real role model (in both his personal and professional life).

Anyone know how to save those .wmv videos?

I've only watched vid-5, and I see he uses yoko-tomoenage with his left leg; is that better when fighting lefties, as he was? I've always done tomo with my right leg, but want to develop yoko-tomo -- should I stick with rightleg, or is useful to be able to use my left leg too?

yoko tomo is much more common in competitions than regular tomo, so definitely work on it...

some people can do yoko tomo with both of their legs and bring their opponents over either side with each leg...try it and see what works.

There is no "best" way in judo. Some people love throw A, others find that throw A sucks for them. Both may become world champs. You gotta see what works for you.

btw, yoko tomo leads into armbars/triangles and you are less likely to have an incorrect score against you (ie. the ref thinks that the other person took you down instead of you going to your back)...
