UFC president Dana White saw Kenny Florian's loss to Gray Maynard at UFC 118 on Saturday night as yet another sign that Florian cracks under the pressure of the big fights, falling short just as he's about to reach the top.

But to hear Florian tell it, the defeat was far more physical than mental.

"I take what Dana said as a compliment because I think he really believes in my skills as a fighter. I was capable of winning the fight but I would have to have fought a very boring fight. I felt great mentally & physically. I have more work to do on my wrestling & have already made the arrangements to become much better in that area of my game."

"Gray out wrestled me. I didn't crumble. I have won many main events & important fights. I blame my weakness in wrestling on the loss, not my mental game."

"I thought my defensive wrestling would have been enough but it wasn't. I will be working with high level wrestlers on a ridiculously consistent basis to improve this. I need to 10X more than I was to ensure that it is not only muscle memory but so I can prevent losing in this manner in the future."

You mean like he did against Gomi? Phone Post

wrong gameplan imo

Grays jiu jitsu is really raw.
an aggressive guard would be able to get Kenny into a good position or back to his feet much better then trying to create a scramble and wrestle with a 3x All-American who is bigger and stronger

He will never get his wrestling to where he can stop a Gray shot. He should work on his bottom game instead.

Sounds fair enough. We'll see how he's able to advance his game.

This. And use some of his highly-touted Muay Thai, instead of allowing Maynard to dictate literally the ENTIRE FIGHT.

Fell into the Alves v Fitch trap and its just another of the countless examples of it.

Too tentative on the feet actually makes it easier to be taken down sometimes.

Anderson looked like he modified his game plan against Sonnen. Basically saying that if he gets taken down he is going down to the mat guns blazing.

This made those opening round sequences of that fight exciting as hell. Also he at least gave himself a chance to damage Sonnen on the feet

Ken Flo should've just drilled Omoplatas all day long...

I'm not sure Sonnen v Silva is a good example of what Kenny needs to do, considering if it was a 3 rounder Silva would've lost to decision exactly in the same way Kenny lost the other night

Kenny lost cuz his brother didn't scream enough. Phone Post

He needs to get the fuck away from his brother.

The art of brawling while sprawling is life long pursuit.

Not everyone can do it like Chuck and CC.

I finish fights.

florian just needed more offense standing and from his back. he hardly tried

Maynard might have been more hesitant to try to put his hands on Kenny if Kenny had actually tried to hit him at some point.

I was capable of winning the fight but I would have to have fought a very boring fight...but fighting a boring style has never been what I do.

"Like when I spent fifteen minutes trying my hardest to push BJ through the cage with my shoulder. That was exciting as hell!"

Good point. Even Frankie utilizes some BJJ in his bottom game. Kenny tried to focus on scrambling back to his feet.

Florian is correct.

Although physical strength may be a problem also.

It's a nice smokescreen answer. Kenny seems like he's in denial here.

Kenny was the one that said GSP's wrestling would have him prepared for anything Maynard had to offer in terms of wrestling.

Mentally, Kenny looked depressed and unexcited. He was fighting in his hometown and he just looked like he didn't want to be there. He looked like he mentally gave up just like before the fight with Penn.
