Follow up: Alliance BJJ Atlanta

So, a little over a month ago I wrote about Alliance BJJ and how they were basically bullies and trying to essentially scam us out of money.

The quick of it was that we signed a contract with them, then canceled it within the 7 day period that was acceptable. We did this because we ran into a financial strain (girlfriend was laid off all the sudden). We were told to bring them a letter of explaining why we were canceling, which we did on 10/20/2006. We signed up on 10/16/2006.

Well, when we asked for our first month's fee's back since we didn't train even once, they refused. They said it was "non refundable". However, it doesn't say this anywhere in their gym, not does it say it anywhere on the contract, no were we every told about this either. So, naturally we disputed the charges with our credit card.

After an investigation, the credit card company agreed that this was not a legitimate charge and so they notified Alliance that the charge has been disputed. Well, Alliance is back and boy are they mad!

I get a call on Friday about our "Account not being up-to-date" and that we owe for November and December. I knew something like this was going to happen so I kept our contract and letter of cancelation and all that. Then, I see a charge of $190 on my credit card from them. I called and talked to Stephen and he says the following:

"You were supposed to send a letter of cancelation by certified mail."

I said, No, Stephen... Don't start that. You told us that bringing the letter in person to the gym would be fine and when we asked you if we needed to follow up with a letter by certified mail, you said not to worry about it. Regardless, you got the letter. You've already acknowledged you got our cancelation many many times. You can't go back on that.

So, he says: "Well, you disputed the charges with your credit card company." In which I replied "You're damn right we did. You had no right to charge us. There is nowhere in your gym or on the contract that states those fee's were non refundable.". Stephen says "But it was a verbal agreement!" Which is absolutely asinine and I told him that. I said that we never were told that. We're honest people and we would have never agreed to that to begin with. We're always weary about writing contracts and make sure we aren't going to get stiffed if something bad happens. We read the contract fully before we signed it and I have it sitting right here and have read it 3 more times. It does NOT state that these fee's are non refundable. It simply says that we are allowed to cancel within 7 days. We canceled in 4. Besides, you can't say one thing and write a contract for another... It doesn't work that way.

At this point he starts calling me "My friend" a lot and raising his voice with me and getting very frustrated. He starts telling me to to contact ASF (their billing company) and handle it through them. However, I had just one question for Stephen about the billing process and he wouldn't let me get it in edge wise. All I wanted to ask was "Are you initiating the billing through ASF or do they handle everything?" but every time I started to ask this question, I was cut off with "Look, my friend! You must call ASF!!" in which I replied, "That's fine and I will. However, I need to know..." and then I was hung up on.

I did call ASF and they agreed... that this charge was not legitimate. Of course I have to again fax our letter of cancelation, the contract and such to ASF, but they said once they receive it, that we won't have to worry about being charged again. Which, I sincerely hope is the case.

I know tons of people say this all the time even though they don't actually have a lawyer, but my entire family actually does have a lawyer and it has been SO frustrating that I decided that if I receive any more frustration from them that it's just going to the lawyer from here on out...

Anyway, I just needed to vent but also let any Atlantians know about Alliance BJJ. They're just quite simply a bully. If they don't get their way, they will try their hardest to scam you and screw you. Sure, they're nice in person, but their business practices are VERY unethical and extremely disappointing. I'm personally so damn sick and tired of crappy customer service. Companies that think they can get away with anything because they are a company.

Just a word of advice, stay away from this place. In my last post about them I said that maybe others will have a different experience and maybe it was just us and such... but I just wouldn't even chance it. They're nuts, rude and unethical. All of this over $200... It's just nasty. I know there are quite a few people on this forum that train there and all I can say is I'm sorry... I hope you never experience what we have.

Alliance lost our business. We canceled because of a financial situation. Well, a month later that financial situation was fixed. However, since Alliance screwed us over from the point of cancelation, we went somewhere else. They lost 2 members because of their greedy unethical ways and $200. Way to go!

Here some links to help you out.

typical brazilians and I love the "my friend" it's a sure sign of shady brazilians.

did you really come on here to warn people?

Let me say this and I am sorry for your experience but I have trained at the Alliance Atlanta School since 1999 and have never experience anything like you are refering. I have always been treated with respect and friendship . I have never been "bullied" or treated unethically . I realize you are upset and think you have been wronged but to get on this forum and purposely try to tarnish someone who is well respected is in my opinion out of line . Call Jacare and discuss it with him . My name is Chad Mason so there will be no doubts who wrote this

i kind of agree with chad.  i dont think this is a warning as much as you trying to bash them.

you could just say "i got screwed out of cash, so be weary"  but you went into intricate details and went out of your way to talk crap

My personal experience with Alliance BJJ has been entirely positive, but it sounds like they really fucked up here. I guess since the school has grown so much in past few years they feel like they can afford to screw over a potential customer or two without too much negative business impact.

I know they've been doing their billing through ASF for a while, so maybe Steve at the front desk really was unable to fix the problem without going through them. Even so, it's pretty poor customer service to simply pass the buck to another company without making any effort to address your concerns.

This is why our club doesn't use contracts.

We're small enough you can pay as you go or up front.

The good thing is that our instructor lets you work it out with him.

If you haven't paid in a while he'll sit with you and let you know it and work something out etc. He won't let it go too long though.

Exactly what World Class level schools/instructors are in the Atlanta area???? Does anyone know of a good school in or near Warner Robins, Georgia????

I went up there on the 8th w/ a couple of friends & we trained @ both locations. We had a great time. There was a 6 hour gap between classes & Jacare went out of his way to accommodate since we drove up from another state. Everyone we trained w/ was very cool. We didn't encounter a single ego. Stephen even took us out to eat after the first class w/ a couple of purple belts.

Just had to share a positive experience training @ Alliance.

Jacare was really cool to me as well as the other guys I have met from the school.

LOL

Jacare's school and the affiliate in Phoenix City were absolutely wonderful to me. Not only did they go out of there way to make sure I got good training, I never ran into money issues with them either.

I'm sorry you had such a bad experience brother.

You should make up with Jacare by purchasing a lot of tickets for a fight coming up in Atlanta on Friday, Jan. 19 and bringing the tickets to his gym as a Holiday gift.

Regarding contracts....as a school owner it is a nessessasry evil. My partner and I have full time jobs...we don't have to the time to chase people down who don't pay their dues on time...everyone has a an excuse/sob story.

Bottem line, if you buy a car and don't drive it and it sits in the drive way, do you still have to pay your monthly payments?.....damn right. Same thing with gym contracts.

This sounds more like a "F" those guys than a venting session. And like us...if there is a contract dispute, you deal with the contact company (thats what they get paid for).

Funny thing is, everyone that pays and comes to train doesn't complain. Its always the ones that pay and then don't show up.

yeah; I know. Just trying to get some free advertising since Atlanta people are sure to click on this thread.

Oh; and Jacare has always been fair to me. Just trying to avoid controversy while getting free advertising... :)

GZFS - No. It's not a full time gig for my instructor. It's 4 days a week.

Our club has anywhere from 25 to 30 people at any given time. Class size runs from 10 to 20 people.

www.fateh.ca is his site.

I'm not bashing the "entire Alliance" network. Does my post not say "Alliance BJJ Atlanta" ?? This is very specific to Atlanta.

Jacare was no help. As a matter of fact, he was contacted by Stephen and he told Stephen to not give us our initial payment back. It wasn't Stephen telling us that.

Am I bashing the school or instructors? No. Am I bashing their business ethic? Absolutely. It's immoral. I'm quite sure a lot of you haven't had the same experience because not many of you have had contract disputes with them. I mean, it was as if this was their first cancelation because they had no idea how to handle it initially.

We were originally told by everyone "Oh, everyone is like family here. We'll take care of you." blah blah blah... When I canceled the contract, I made them aware as to why we were canceling and that it was temporary, but we had no clue as to when it would clear up. However, when it did clear up, we would be back because we were looking forward to training with Manu. Like I said, one month later, we were fine, but the damage had already been done by that time.

You can take this as you want. Obviously some of you that feel some sort of loyalty to the school will tell me that I've gone over the line and bashed them. Well, I think it's absolutely fine for me to tell the truth. It's not like I came on here and called them ass holes or said anything about their mothers. I am talking directly about their business practice and how absolutely RUDE they were to us.

Yes, I'm mad. However, I'm not the type that gets all loud and yells when I'm mad. However, I was yelled at by Stephen on the phone just for trying to ask him "Are you initiating these charges or is ASF?"

Look guys, if you're paying them, sure they're like family... sure they're nice. You're paying them. However, what we did was 100% legal and legitimate. We followed the rules of the contract. It was unfortunate what happened. I wish it didn't. Manu kicked ass and I wanted to train with him SO badly. All of the Muay Thai guys there were awesome. However, there is no way on earth I would ever go back and I think everyone that is considering this school should know exactly what happened.

It should be public knowledge whether it makes you mad or makes you happy. Sorry...

"you could just say "i got screwed out of cash, so be weary" but you went into intricate details and went out of your way to talk crap"

If he'd have said "i got screwed so be weary" there would be people on here crying "give us details KKM" "Don't just post that shit without backing it up"

If you want to become the best MMA fighter you can, I will tell you all day about The HardCore Gym, and tell you all day about the MMA fighters who have been trained there and about all the ones who come there now.

Like I said, take it as you will...

You have to understand that contract cancelations aren't an everyday occurrence for martial arts school. People typically sign up and stay on their contract. So, no... I absolutely do not find it a little odd that I'm the first person to make these complaints. It makes a lot of sense to me.

Am I lying or am I unjust in these accusations? Apparently not... Our bank and the ASF company have both stated that this is not a legitimate charge due to us abiding by the contract cancelation rules. I can understand you lack of trust on this situation, but... what can I do to gain your trust? Nothing... and that's fine. However, people should still know how this place responds to them not getting their way. Unethical. Immoral. Rude.

Again, take it as you want... believe me or not. However, I'm glad you read what I had to say.
