Opening the closed guard in no gi is very tough. I noticed Mike Fowler had an interesting approach and it seems to work really well for him.
It looks like he has one elbow inside the thigh and he is hugging around the waiste with the other arm. It caused enough pressure to make his opponents open up and then he would start passing.
Did anyone see his matches? What are the details for that way of opening?
What you describe sounds similar to a pass in the Garcia 3 Series, the disc on passing, obviously, Technique #4 to show you what a super dork I am.
1st- he does it when the guy won't let Marcelo grab his arms, so the guy on bottom has hands behind his head like he's chillin.
2nd- he hugs around the waist with right arm and stays tight w/ his head/body to avoid subs.
3rd- as he sits to his right side, kind of on his right hip, switching his base almost as you would going cross side to scarf hold, he uses his left hand to pop open the guys right leg. (this is where it differs from what you said, he uses his hand on the shin not elbow on thigh) AS SOON AS he pops that leg open he steps over the opponents right leg with his left leg going to half gaurd with an underhook. Knowing what you're gonna do you can keep the guy flat and pass quickly and your opponenet will be somewhat surprised by the move. Just a note, a lot of times before you use your hand to pop open the legs the guy opens to look for a triangle so you need to be ready to control his leg a little with your hand and step over ASAP.
It's a little risky with certain people and I'd love to know any more details too or Fowler's way to do it.
That pass scrap is talking about is also on the Margarida 101s. I call it the Sao Paolo pass because a number of the Compania Paulista and Lotus club guys use that way to pass. Givanildo sp? Santana, Nasciemento sp? does it more then anyone else. I like to use that to open the legs when I am having trouble getting posture against larger opponents.
Wow, sounds interesting. Yea, I'm pretty sure he was using the elbow against the thigh to creat pressure, but I could be wrong.
Marcelo's version sounds cool, I have his first DVD set, and I'm still studying and learning from it. I really have to check out his new set some time.
I learnt it correctly from the source and it has been very reliable apart from the time it counted the most :)
In any case, it there are dangers, you can get triangled if you let the other person get control of your arm, or swept if your base is off. In fact Marcelo himself has screwed up that exact pass in competition this year and been swept.
But the fact that he (and many others like Mike Fowler) actually uses that pass in competition against top competitors means he has enough faith in the basic concept to have it part of his main arsenal, so for those wondering about it I wouldn't disregard it.
It is also a passing option any time you get stuck in a closed guard overhook.
Off the top of my head the guys I have seen use it in competition, Margarida, Santana, C. Vieira, F. Nasciemento, Garcia that's off the top of my head.
It is a tricky past like you said even the top guys get swept etc. using it. Like I said I only use it when I can't seem to get posture on a bigger stronger opponent but, it saves my ass when I need it.
Definitely tricky the way I learned it. It's a good pass for when the guy puts his hands up so you can't grab them like Marcelo sets it up.
Or like prim8 says when you can't get posture it's something to try but you really need to step over that leg. It's hard to control the leg that will triangle you with just your arm. That is why Marcelo reaches back for the shin, I think you get some more control.
I would never try this move on certain guys and only when I felt like I was really tight/heavy on him and also your hand helps but you need to be able to step over the leg ASAP.
The tripler header dvd by bjj tapes has Fabio Naciemento using it for sure. I'm not sure if that's the one Santana used it on as well. That's off the top of my head for what comp dvds it's on.
When Marcello reaches back with his left hand, does he grab the material of the right pant leg at the shin, or does he just push down open palm? And where in the shin? Mid leg, bottom of pant leg, etc?
