In the past, due to weird work schedule and living in bumfuck nowhere, I haven't been able to do bjj more than a pay per class basis and drive an hour to do so. I work 6pm-5am 6 days a week. In 59 days I go to dayshift and will work 8 hours a day. I've been on the grind for 6 years to achieve normalcy.
So, today I went to a more bumfuck town about 20 min away and unexpectedly found an affiliate of where I occasionally trained ran by a respected brown belt of a respected lineage (Draculino). Very unexpected considering the small, weird little town it's in.
No questions or concerns, I'm just fucking hyped I won't have to drive an hour for solid instruction and good times! I expected to have the commute to train and honesty probably wouldn't have pursued it for more than an hour a week because of that. As a wrestler for 15 years I'm very excited to have found something close by thats legit.
StankieEdgar - do They teach sumo too or just regular UFC?
I'll have to ask!
They have some judo players and a wrestling class tho!
Can brown belts promote? I don't care since I have legit instruction (I know where his brown belt came from) and rolling partners, but just curious as I've only ever taken class with a bb instructor
Driving an hour+ for blue/purple belt instruction used to be the norm for most of the U.S. when I started.
"Can brown belts promote?"
Generally speaking, lower belt training associations have regular visits/seminars from their parent black belts; promotions tend to be done then. Some places have different procedures.

I think they can. Even if not, he'll have his instructor in for seminars and to officially promote if needed. Or you can travel to his instructors school occasionally for the purpose of promotion.

So you're finally going to study under Sifu Clear? I think you'll learn a lot!

Depends on the instructor. Some instructors delegate authority to promote to blue belt to their brown belt nstructors, or maybe higher, others may want to test while the head coach is in town.
Make sure to tell them it's your first time ever rolling and then proceed to crossface, heel hook and neck crank everyone you roll with. People love that!
I lucked up in a similar situation, Randy Malacas was holding classes in the YMCA of a tiny military town 5 minutes from my office. Having a legit bb from Nova Uniao was pretty exciting considering how small Hinesville is.
