Fractured collarbone- recovery?

Hi

My friend was thrown illegally to the front in Judo practice last week and fractured his collarbone as well as straining a few ligaments around the area.

What would be a normal recovery period and how soon could he come back to practice?

Tnks

I dislocated mine back in 97. I did not get back on the mat until 98. But that's me.

if he does some major rehab then it might only be a few months. if he isnt very serious about the rehab then it will take as long as it takes and then some.

are you sure he was thrown "illegally" or did he try to twist out.. ive only seen those injuries happen when twisting out of throws.

How old is he? The younger you are with a broken collarbone, the faster you'll heal. I broke mine the summer before my senior year in high school mountain biking. I was able to do lots of stuff after 3 weeks, but it was more like 10-12 weeks to be comfortable doing athletic stuff.

Thanks for the responses, guys

Josh: Unfortunately, I wasn't looking when it occurred. (Actually packing my stuff to go to BJJ!) when I heard the sensei yell: " Illegal throw - hanso make " or something like that. The next thing, I saw my friend on the ground in pain. Later on, I heard that the guy tried a sasae but sort of flubbed it and threw to the front.

You're right, my friend could have tried to twist out of them. He fights competitions and is quite prone to twisting out of throws

Greg: he's in his mid-thirties. So, he hasn't got the resiliency of youth there. The doctor actually told him about 3-4 months but wasn't sure as he was unfamiliar with the practice of Judo.

Famliman: Was that more because of the psychological aspect? I know myself that when I get an injury, it's more of the battle of the mind than the body for me.
