I LOL'd at the UFC 125 commercial calling Edgar the best lightweight in the world. Usually I think the Zuffa hate is a bit overblown but the blatant "mexican" angle they put on Cain and now trying to tout Edgar as the best LW in the world has me wondering WTF the marketing folks at Zuffa are smoking. I feel like I'm in the 80's all the sudden with the hyperbolic ad-speak.
Does anyone really think Edgar is the best LW in the world?
Well he just beat the consensus LW GOAT twice.
If not him than who would you put as number 1?
Wait til Aldo moves up :)

Good question. I feel like Edgar is a bad matchup for BJ plus his fight strategy against Edgar was asinine. I feel like he hasn't proved he's the top LW with just decision wins over BJ. I'd say BJ still ranks over Edgar although he matches up poorly with him. If he finishes Gray decisively it would definitely sway my view towards a #1 claim having more credence.
I'd also like to see what Pettis can do in the UFC.
Oh, and IMO Gilbert Melendez would rank above Frankie.
Frankie would beat anyone besides gray just because he has such good wrestling and very quick and effective stand up
I knew there was some ass-backwards logic coming up. What part of Hawaii are you from DanJer?

It's simple Fedor logic. Fedor beats everyone, Werdum beats Fedor therefore Fedor > Werdum. Simple!

Maybe you shouldn't take a stand on this particular matter when you admittedly would place Penn over Edgar because of what you "feel" and despite Edgar beating him twice.
Just throw out the results, huh?
lol

MursJewishHairStylist - He deserves it.

Rankings are subjective or do you rank Werdum above Fedor? One guy can beat another one and not rank above that person. UFC LW champion absolutely. #1 LW in the world, not so sure.
How can you not rank Werdum over Fedor? All you can base it on is 'who have you beat'. What crazy criteria do you use for your rankings?
I would take Pettis over Edgar. Relentless pace, great striking and great BJJ. He's got it all.

That would be fine if rankings actually worked like that. But every "expert" ranking system I've seen doesn't. They appear to be a varying mix of: who beat who, what was the relative status of the beatee at said win, does the person finish fights, and how impressive are the wins. A mix of objective stats with completely subjective impressions.
However, I'm surprised people are jumping in to defend Edgars #1 claim (or Zuffa's) so maybe I lol'd too soon. I still personally wouldn't rank him at the top. We'll see how Saturday goes.
He beat the LW GOAT (not my opinion but the opinion of many) twice, and pretty handily. I like Frankie and think he could take any LW in the world.
NarlyPersianDude -
sorry man your a 100% wrong, Frankie has fought BJ twice, the first was like a draw, but a draw and a win, still means something. I am a BJ Penn fan, but your logic makes zero sense. Fedor fought Werdum once, if he fought him again and lost, of course he is still the goat, but Werdum would be clearly be ranked above him.
I also think Pettis would beat Edgar, but again, I cannot rank him above him. You totally have to rank Frankie number 1 at lw for now. Its without a doubt.
I respect your opinion as you've had some good arguments I've enjoyed on here and I realize putting BJ over Edgar in RANKINGS may be controversial but no way do I think Edgar is #1 with Pettis, Melendez and even Ben Henderson in the mix not to mention Gray.
I personally think BJ won the first match as well which would put him in the same situation as Werdum/Fedor, at least to those of us who think BJ won the first match.
I'll concede Frankie could be arguably #1 IF he beats Gray but not definitively at this point. I'm willing to be convinced after Saturday.
Edgar or Melendez, pretty even, might give the edge the Gilbert on finishing ability.
I have difficulty calling someone "the best in the world" if they have little or no tools to close an opponent out.

Of course rankings are partially subjective. There are too many permutations to head-to-comparisons and at some point it becomes subjective.
That's why your original post that Zuffa is smoking something and calling their ad hyperobole is off.
I understand you don't agree. That's fine, but at the same time, do they have a legitimate case for him as No. 1? Since we can't truly establish a best, since there's always someone else coming, or some other prospect to imagine in the role, we can only look at their case, and being the champ, beating BJ Penn 2x, Sherk, etc., they have a case. He's at least in the argument, so it's not really an outlandish claim, just one you have a mild disagreement with.
