Mauricio “Shogun” Rua is currently rehabing his knee in Orange County, Calif., and has trained three times so far with Freddie Roach. The famed boxing trainer told GracieMag.com he is on a “special assignment” to help Rua prepare to fight Antonio Rogerio Nogueira at UFC 161 on June 15, 2013 at the MTS Centre in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.

“I was studying a lot of tape on him to get an idea of how he fights,” said Roach.

“He didn’t know how to transfer his weight too well, and he wasn’t a very big puncher at first. Once we got him pivoting and punching off the right foot, keeping his boxing stance, he punched really, really hard when he did it correctly.

“I don’t think he was ever taught how to do it correctly.”

“[Shogun] has a little problem with his knee. I haven’t started working on his cardio yet, but he and my strength coach have gotten together … I think we have to take care of that first before we start getting into the cardio more.”

I always thought Shogun had decent hands by MMA standards. There really is a massive gap between MMA striking and professional boxing.

Hope to see Shogun regain his old glory.

God dammit looks like its that fucking knee again Phone Post

As long as he is just going there to sharpen his hands and not letting these guys mess with his game too much it will be a good thing. Some guys in the past have let these boxing coaches fuck with their stance and try make them boxers. Its still mma.

Agreed, but Shogun has been doing Muay Thai since he was a kid, it'd take a long time and a lot of work to get him to abandon his MT stance.

I dont believe that, and disagree with Freddie. Shogun has always had power in his hands, he put quite a few guys to sleep with his hands but he's always threw wild looping punches. It sounds like Freddie is just teaching him to box, angling and pivoting with his footwork and probably tightening up his punches but sorry Fred you can't take credit for his power, his hands were always heavy.

Oh man.

My all time fav working on some new stuff.

Gives me a false sense of hope probably.

I just wish he'd have a few more great fights and WINS!

you typically can get even the biggest punchers to generate even more power, when they use more efficient mechanics

i think Freddy was saying Shogun was throwing weak compared to what he is capable of

Shogun is going to be that fighter in 15 years we talk about how great he was but how good would he have been without the constant knee injuries Phone Post

Shotgun certainly knows how to throw a punch "correctly", just ask the plethora of people he has knocked out. He may not have ever learned how Freddie Roach would like him to throw a punch, but he definitely knows how to throw a punch correctly. Phone Post

gamer is gonna be furious.

u can throw a punch incorrectly and still knock people out

eg randleman vs ninja

shogun has always had pretty poor punching technique, but his great timing etc made it good

I really like the idea of Shogun working with Roach. I don't know why... Phone Post

Thiaguy is current his in a bush outside Freddie's place waiting for the right moment to pounce. How dare you say such things about Shogun Freddie??? You will pay!!! Phone Post

hid ffs Phone Post

Tankhead - I really like the idea of Shogun working with Roach. I don't know why... Phone Post

I'm
More excited about him working on Shoguns cardio. Holy Moly if he sharpens up his striking a bit then get in amazing shape.

WATCH OUT Phone Post

Aj the article quotes Freddie saying shogun wasn't a very big puncher at first and Freddie's reflecting on his first 3 sessions with shogun. I take that as Freddie meaning when shogun got to him he didn't have much power. That's what it sounds like

His knee(s) have also been wrecked for years now.

You can't throw a punch 'correctly' if your knee is wrecked and you can't plant on it or push off of it correctly.

I'm guessing at least part of his problem is that he's been arming his punches more and more over the years to make up for the fact that he's not able to dig in with his feet, pivot, and put pressure on his knees to deliver maximum power.

heres roach saying that when shogun first came in, he punched like a girl
