freestyle wrestling worlds- Las Vegas 9/10 to 9/12

hd94 - Is David Taylor competing? I love watching him wrestle Phone Post 3.0

No. He got manhandled by Dake at WTTs (who in turn was beat up by Burroughs.)

Bilyal Makhov earned a Bronze Medal in The Greco-Roman Field!

Bonus: Here He is Training https://instagram.com/p/4TyewiqdLj

Makhov was the beneficiary of bad reffing... two leg fouls and a pin not called... he was done after that match... could barely get off the mat...

i would bet a dollar to a doughnut that he doesn't medal in freestyle just from being worn out from greco... he looked tired all day

still a beast and i definitely interested in seeing him in the UFC when he makes his debut...

Tomorrow (9/9) Metcalf (65kg) will wrestle.

Then on Friday (9/10) Humphrey (61kg), Herbert (86kg), and Snyder (97kg) will wrestle.

Finally, on Saturday (9/11) Ramos (57kg), Green (70kg), BURROUGHS (74kg), and Rey (125kg) will wrestle.

What to look out for tomorrow (9/9)...

For men's freestyle, only Metcalf is competing.

Metcalf was an absolute stud in high school and college. In college especially, he had a lot of fans. WIN Magazine awarded him the Hodge Trophy twice, which is the Heisman of college wrestling. He seemed to destroy even the most elite of college wrestlers. It seemed like he was wrestling in an entirely different dimension.

But then he graduated and tried freestyle. Freestyle has been a different story for him. In the US he's always been in the top two or three, and he's actually made the team three times before as the US's number one, but he hasn't yet gotten anything going at worlds.

In the past he's had good results leading up to worlds, only to lose early in the tournament. This year he's looking as good as he's ever looked. He's earned his current ranking of number two in the world, and worlds are being held in the US, so if ever it was his time to win a medal it's now.

If he wins a medal, it will be well earned. His weight class is full of studs.

Azerbaijan's Asgarov is listed as a competitor. He won a world silver at the age of 17 and an Olympic gold at the age of 19. Then he disappeared. Now 22, he's back and has had good results.

Frank Chamizo of Cuba is also here. He's only ranked fifth but he wrestles like a stud. Gomez of Puerto Rico is here. Past world medalist, and past NCAA champ. He is a slick wrestler. Russia is sending last year's world champ Ramonov. As for the current world number 1? Iran's Mohammadi, last year's silver medalist.

Very tough field.

Brackets are out, and Metcalf has a really tough draw. He's in the tougher side of the bracket with the current world number one from Iran and the Olympic champ from Azerbaijan.

Last year'c champ from Russia is on the easy side of the bracket. The Russian's chances of making it to the finals look really good right now.

Dont forget about the chiks wrestling... USA has Helen maroulis at 55kg ranked #1 in the world and Adeline Gray at 75kg ranked #1 in the world...

Metcalf won three matches before losing by a hair to the number one ranked Iranian. The Iranian surprisingly got pinned by Chamizo (a Cuban representing Italy) in the semis, so Metcalf is out of the tournament.

From watching Metcalf we learned that the Chinese kid he wrestled is nails. The kid was tough, strong, and beastly. He horsed Metcalf around, and it's not something you see very often. He just barely lost to Metalf, too, after teching a very good Turk.

The finals is Chamizo versus the Uzbek.

Chamizo has always been a stud, and everything's finally coming together for him. He's fluid, quick, and strong. His opponent is someone I've never heard of from Uzbekistan. The Ukbek is having the tournament of his life, just clocking all his opponents. I'll be interesting to see who wins the world title.

The finals will be at 9:30pm ET on the United World Wrestling wesbite.

both Maroulis and Gray will wrestle for gold tonight and Icho of japan will be going for her 10th World gold medal at 58kg...

brent only won 2 matches... after watching him get man handled by the chinese wrestler i was not too confident of his chances against the Iranian... the last gasp takedown at the end made the 5-4 score much closer than the match actually was...

i only got to watch Chamizo a little, but, he looked ridiculous... so much more quick and aggressive than the rest... he would have most likely done to metcalf what he did the Iranian...

and Novachkov got absolutely fuked by the refs...

on a related note, watching the chinese put metcalf's face into the mat repeatedly with the snap down made me more confident about pico's chances next year... pico already proved he can wrestle with metcalf and if he continues to improve on leg game ala his bronze medal match at junior worlds, we won't have to see him wrestle for Mexico in 2016...

ttt

Metcalf really had a tough go at it today. He managed to win 2 matches before losing and being eliminated, but the turning point seemed to be his 2nd match. That Chinese was a complete monster and really wore Brent out. It looked like China got the winning points at the end, but was not awarded them and an exhausted Brent moved on. In his 3rd bout against Iran, he seemed to be tired still and unable to put on the pressure we've become accustomed to. Brent made it close at the end, but Iran really controlled the entire match. When Iran lost, Brent was eliminated and back to the drawing board. I don't know that he can improve anymore. He seems to have gotten every last bit of ability out of himself and with Pico gaining, we may have seen his final world level appearance.

Brent needs a mix of luck and bad performances from other guys to medal, IMO.

It's funny. I couldn't stand Brent in college. He was seemed to me an annoying Brands brothers clone who truly believed everybody was out to get Iowa wrestling. I have since done a total 180 on him - really pulling for him.

2016 is his last hurrah. I would love to see him take home some hardware.

wiggum, I used to feel the same way about Brent but his continued dedication and commitment to wrestling finally won me over. When I saw his draw last night, I just shook my head and felt strongly he would win 1, lose 1 and be done. I certainly could not see him going deep in the bracket, given the monsters on his side. After the China match, he looked beaten. When is the last time we saw an exhausted Brent hanging on, trying to not lose?

Next year domestically will be awesome with everyone trying to make the Olympic team. I can't wait.

I was super pumped after watching Maroulis win gold.

I'll let all you guys know when the three men's 65kg matches are about to start.

It'll be on the United World Wrestling site.

Moist Gracie -

Bummed about Metcalf as well. On the right day he could win it all.

Metcalf is so dedicated to the sport, and he's been at it so long. It's hard not to want him to win.

I think he relies to much on the high-c, and the top guys can stop it. The top guys are also as strong and physical as he is, so it makes his offensive options relatively limited. (Of course, he can easily beat everyone else.)

He's been in the top 15 or so in the world for years, and he has beaten a lot of the top 3 types, so it was not impossible for him to win a medal. It just wasn't his day.

It's going down. The three 65kg men's matches are going to start in a few minutes. (Check out the United World Wrestling site.)

First bronze medal match- Ramonov vs. Mongolia. Ramonov is the returning world champ, and Mongolia is a returning bronze medalist. Both guys are studs.

Second bronze medal match- Mohammadi vs. Asgarov. Mohammadi is the returning silver medalist and was ranked number one coming into worlds. Asgarov won the Olympics at age 19 in 2012. He's only recently started looking like he was back in top form. Obviously, he's always dangerous. Both guys are tremendously talented.

Gold medal match- Chamizo vs. Uzbekistan. Chamizo is a pleasure to watch. Quick, strong, and fluid. He's world class techincally and physically. The Uzbek came out of nowhere and decked everyone he's faced today. I know nothing about him. It'll be interesting to see how they match up.

Chamizo is the champ at 65kg. Uzbekistan nearly won it. Both guys were ridiculously good. Really good performance.

Adeline Gray! Awesome.
Gold Medal. Awesome.
National Anthem. Awesome.
