French to Replace English in the EU

The advantage French has is that it is the main language in Brussels itself, so a diplomat should probably pick up a few words just to help with living in the city. The big cities for European and international organizations are Brussels, Strassbourg, Geneva, and Vienna, so 3/4 are Francophone and knowing French is really useful if someone wants to be a bureaucrat in that system. But has nowhere near the utility of English.

What is more interesting is seeing what happens to the Euro/IGO/Brussels dialect of English when the only native speakers in the EU are the Irish.

Yeah, but it’s bullshit. Why should one country’s diplomats have the advantage of having their native tongue be the common language. If anything, Brexit is an argument against French, as English is now more neutral. The French desperately wants to be as relevant as they were in the 18th century…
