Funny Carlson Gracie Team Story

Haha wallid is an intense guy, it kinda sucks how a lot of those guys left Carlson sr. and did their own thing.

Had they all stayed with Carlson, we would have the top team in bjj and mma today.

I never got to train with sr. but I have attended a jr seminar and he was the nicest dude ever. Not the greatest english though haha.

 Wallid never left!!!!

neither did Rey or Comprido either iirc.

^ I know but Liborio, murilo, sperry, left and made BTT.

 yeah.

does anyone know if any of those guys ever got to patch things up with Carlson prior to his passing?

PTM2020 -  yeah.

Others know better than I do. I was told he made up with some of them. Phone Post

I have heard that they came to an understanding, but honestly I can't say for sure.

Either way Carlson is a legend and greatly missed.

True. Rey was very loyal. Carlson used to stay at Rey's when he came to town. They were close.

And, FWIW, Rodrigo Medieros one of the founders of the BJJ Revolution Team and BB under Carlson is not the same person as Rodrigo "Comprido" Medieros. ("Comprido" wasn't under Carlson, but rather Jacare).

I had the opportunity to train with Sr. on two different occasions, both at my instructors' (Julio "Foca" Fernandez) Academy.

The second time I trained with Carlson, he was showing a basic Ezekiel Choke from the Rear Mount. I was a Brown Belt at the time, and I was paired up with a newer White Belt.

When it was my partners turn to practice the choke, he was struggling to get it. Before I even had a chance to correct him, Carlson rushed over to help. I was impressed by how passionate he was to see everyone succeed with his techniques.

Unfortunately for me, Carlson decided it would be easier to adjust me, instead of adjusting the White Belt. He firmly grabbed my skull and twisted my head (and tweaked my neck in the process) in order to help set the choke correctly.

He then looked down, noticing my pain and proclaimed:

"Look! Real Position!"

He was so happy to see that the "choke" put a look of pain on my face.

Ha ha!

My neck was sore for a solid week after that. The old man was strong!

I got neck cranked by a true legend, and I fondly tell this story as often as I can.

 TTT

Great thread!

T T T for Carlson

aaronlapoi - Small world. Just found out that my judo teammate's brother used to be roommates with Vitor Belfort when Vitor lived in Los Angeles back in the mid 1990s. Anyway, my teammate used to watch some of the "closed door" training sessions when guys like Vitor, Murilo, Liborio, Sperry, and Wallid would roll. He said Wallid was super intense and one time he was going so hard his head hit the wall and put like a 12 inch hole in it. Funny thing is that Wallid kept sparring like nothing happened until people stopped him because his head was so banged up.

Also my judo teammate doesn't really follow BJJ so I see no reason for him to lie. For example, in describing Liborio he initially said some stalky guy who worked at a bank. He then said he thought the guy's name was Ricardo (Liborio's first name). He initially didn't recall Wallid's name, but his description of Wallid fit to a t and when I said Wallid he said, "yeah that's it."

 I remember that.
Also there was Carlao Barretto and some musclebound monster named Sergio there at the time.

iirc, he was going with Murillo. Everybody there was freaking out, everyone except Wallid who didn't even blink an eye.  He had a gash on his forehead too and they had to talk him into stopping.

Vitor was beasting that day, no one could take him down.

Sergio Cohen ?

don't know his last name but he was brazillian, scary lookin, had bad english and built like a diesel.

I read a story on a similar thread about Carlson being at a tournament and getting pissed off with the all the referees , and one of his students made it into the finals , so he stormed the mat and told the ref to get out because he's gonna ref this one himself . ( iirc )

GreatCornholio - Many years back at Naga in Chicago... Carlson sees a white belt getting ready to compete with a purple. He charges the mat and starts screaming at Kip at the top of his lungs. Neither competitor is his student - he was just offended by a white having to compete against a purple. <img src="/images/phone/apple.png" alt="Phone Post" border="0" style="vertical-align:middle;"/>

one guy cares about honor the other cares about dollars

it is what it is

Haha , must be him , I've seen a lot of photo's of all those guys training together ( mostly wearing tsunga's lol ) I always wondered why almost every dude in the photo is very well known but Sergio looking like a beast among beasts and I've never heard his name mentioned . Maybe he just trained and never fought on the big stage . Who knows ? maybe someone here knows him .

 hehe.

ok, here's a story I don't think I've ever told since back then in 96 or whatnot.

I had a couple of co-workers who just started training over there at Carlson's in W.LA when they first opened and they invited me to check out the classes since they knew I trained.

I showed up towards the end of the class and Sergio was one of the first guys to greet me.  He was scary lookin, muscles out the ears but seamed pretty cool.

My dickhead co-worker blurts out 'oh, he trains at machados'. in a very 'ha I gotcha'  type manner.      and I kinda saw sergio's demeanor change like 'oh really???"

I turn to my co-worker and was like 'dude, why you gotta say it like that?'

When I turn around Sergio had one of the whitebelts my size with him and motioned for me to roll with him.  I didn't even have a gi on but he just tells me to take off my shoes.  I feared for what might happen if I said no so I took off my shoes.

Anyways,  I was a whitebelt myself but I had about a year and a half of training in. We start out and Sergio is yelling instructions to the guy in a very competitive manner, The  guy didn't feel too strong,  they just finished class,  so I got mount pretty easily.

Sergio stops it before I could do anything else and grabs a blue belt who also just finished class and matches us up.

I would do pretty well against the blues at my school back, like... more stalemates then getting tapped.    and it was no different with this guy, again,  he was already tired from training.   he pulls guard, tries to sweep, I stuff, he goes for an armbar and I pull out and get to side control.

The tired blue belt was trying to reguard and I was stuffing it fairly easily and had a good crossface on him.

I'm feeling really good about myself and then I look up.

Sergio was taking off the hoody he had on and was fixing the tape on his wrists as if preparing to go with me next.

The fear of God came over me and I sorta let up a little, and the guy reguards and gets the armbar.

Sergio, is like 'ohhh,  good...good'  and puts his hoody back on.

He hands me a flyer, the one below, and invites me to come back tomorrow to take a class.

Anyways, me & my dickhead co-worker took an early lunch the next day because we heard that's when the team practice was, and we walked in literally seconds before seeing  Wallidji's head go through the wall.

I ended up staying at Machados.
