Recently about 4 at home garage trained fighters started showing up to the Gi and no gi BJJ class that I go to. Most have fought a time or two at a local show and then decide they need to really train. The good part is they have a great work ethic. The bad part is you have to teach them stuff they should have learned long ago.
his point, kkm, is that you don't have to get pissed off everytime somebody creates a thread... it's a good thread and will start debate hopefully, unless you're waiting for another kimbo thread.
My point is that it is a good thing to have the guys there. It's good to see the effort they are putting into it. The part that I am suprised about is how they could fight knowing next to nothing. Going to fight with such limited knowledge just seems stupid.
Do they fight garages or fight in Garages or are they trained by Garages...
I really don't get this.
They are actually trained by the garages. They use the "Cover Technique" It protects them from punches being rained down on them. They then use the "O.D.A.D"
Open door and drive technique to run some fool over. The garages are tough.
I've rolled with a few guys that have only learned techniques from tapes and fight videos. They usually are just really hardcore fans that want to take an actual class and really learn what to do. For the most part they have no gi skills and lack any kind of balance (due to lack of technique), but we all start somewhere. A lot of guys have a natural talent that they will build on to develop, you'd be surprised what these guys might be able to do.
Half of the MMA fighters from the early days were garage trained.
good story. now stfu
"it's a good thread and will start debate"
about what?
There are alot of garage groups out there. Some good and some not as good. The fact is that you have to respect people that will do whatever it takes to train when there is not anything worthwhile in their area. I started a garage group back in 2001 with 4 other guys. We grew to about 25+ members that included 5 Pro MMA fighters and 3 amateurs not to mention that alot of them competed regularly in bjj/sub tourneys also. We then became an Affiliated Training Group for awhile under SBGi and just this past August merged with 2 BTT Blackbelts to open a legit academy. Everyone has to start somewhere...
JW
Lober and Tanner were garage guys.
Look at Charles Bennet, he trains in the Garage..."Yea I got weights, I got light weights, I got middle weights, I got heavey weights, I got all kinda weights"
"Going to fight with such limited knowledge just seems stupid."
You gotta give them props for putting it on the line...
they'll learn as they go.
Franklin started in a shed...at least thats what was said during one of the TUF shows.
They said it was like a big lawnmower shed.
Crazy shit if you axe me.
I got to split my time between borrowed time in a college wrestling room and a garage. Do I still qualify as a garage fighter if I was only part-time there?
