I'm going to start out by saying I'm not going to do a move by move break down bjjrapido has already done that for you. So I will review the series without doing the breakdown.
I'm going to start by saying I honestly didn't know what to expect with this set but man was I not only surprised but completely blown away. If you want to learn Marcelo's game here it is PERIOD! I would say 80% of this can be done no gi as well. Where his first set gives you a taste of his game this one just drops it on your head. I have seen a lot of marcelo's matches from his adcc trials, adcc, campos, brasileiro's, a couple of mundials, the arnolds etc. I have been watching his game very closely because I really love his style, this dvd really hides nothing. All his arm drag moves that you see are here, his passes and he really breaks down the back position. All his passing moves are here as well. His half guard passing style is very different than most peoples style and he breaks it down. How Marcelo controls the back which is something a lot of us wanted to know is here as well.
I really can't say enough about this set, if you like Marcelo's style of bjj than I can not say enough about this set about how good it is. All I can say is watch Marcelo roll and if you say to your self how does he do that or why? This answers all your questions.
I would not say this is for a white belt at all, this set assumes you have your basics solid because Marcelo's style kind of goes against the rules at times to achieve position, but that's because he knows the rules well enough to take those chances.
I'd also like to point out that WMA listened to peoples suggestions and each chapter is a new technique not a continuation of the last one. So we are getting what we asked for and there are a lot of moves on these dvds. The quality and voice over are great and the service was great got my set 3 days earlier than I was supposed to when I ordered it. The set was worth the price alone getting the Carvahlo set with it makes it a total steal of a deal. I would have gladly paid for just the Garcia's after seeing how great they are.
This is the first time I can say this I give it FIVE out of FIVE stars. If you are into Marcelos style you can not get a better set. This hands down blows away every set on the market if you are looking for more of an advanced style game. But there is something for everyone here. WMA pushed the bar a lot higher with this set. There is no filler here.
Five out of FIVE stars the first set to get that rating from me.
Good review. I love the set and think anyone who buys it will too. There is just so much info on it that you could reference it ten years from now and still say, "ahhh...cool!"
I honestly didn't think I was going to be that impressed, but man was I ever. I was shocked out how much content was on here and it was all from his game. He really just let it all hang out on this one. Like you said I will be going back to this one for a long time for things it is hands down the best set on the market IMO.
Believe me when I saw these were coming out I was like damn, I can't afford another set. But I pulled out the card and ordered it anyways. I will say this, it was the best money I have ever spent on any instructional. I'm not saying this for any other reason that this is just the most indepth look at anyones game I have ever seen on any set. If you get it you wont regret it.
Just got my set.......it's outa control!! Good techniques but the bottom line is you have to have solid basic skills. Mainly positioning and control. Without that you won't be able to do these or any other techniques. But all I have to say is WOW what an awesome set. I agree with Andre, is you are a white or beginning blue this may not be the set for you.
Havent seen the set, however, the private lesson I did with Marcelo was with the GI -
He had tons of great stuff -
He is so well know for no GI, that people dont even think about how amazing he is with the GI on - people forget he is a BJJ man frist, who just so happens to be a great submission grappler -
I dont know if the set is any good, so I cant recommend you get it.
Is this like the first set where the first 20 moves are him just getting into position, or has that been improved on?
I really hated the way that set was edited - if all those moves would have been combined into one move, instead of like 20 it would have been so much more enjoyable -
No, this is not edited anything like the first one. Each chapter is a new technique, there is no building up to the move like the first series. There are just moves, moves, and more moves. He starts with you in the position and doing the moves. If you watch him compete everything he does is on here and a lot more. Like I said in my review the first set was a taste of his game, this set he drops it on your head like a 10 ton anvil. He talks about his game shows his set up combos for sweeps and how he controls the back etc. Nothing was held back. If you really want to see his game this is it period. I really like his way of playing the butterfly guard it is used in a different set up manner than anyone really teaches. I don't think there is a set on the market that touches this one right now. But, this set is not for everyone white belts really won't have much help with this set at all.
Jspiceman,
No overlap he breaks everything down, like I said this is the best set I have ever seen period. It's the first set I have given five stars to and I have yet to think anyone has really given the perfect set well this one does for advanced guys.
I paid for my Garcia set out of pocket had I not I would have stated so in my review. With that being said I have worked something out with WMA so my future reviews will state that in them. But, this set I paid for so no disclaimer is needed and this was just an honest review, I really love this set. I'm a huge Garcia fan so seeing his game to me is a great thing. I have a private with Garcia on tuesday and will be at his seminar next weekend.
On a side not free tapes are nothing compared to the pics I saw on jjgears forum lol you are the man.
bjjprim,
did the private lesson drive home any of the points you were not sure about after watching the DVD? He seemed to do a very good job explaining the moves on the no gi set.
I have a private lesson this tuesday with him. I'll let you know how it goes. The dvds pretty much cover everything. Matter of fact I hate to say it but, I was like damn when I saw the set because it answered a lot of my questions already. I'm thinking of new things I want to ask him based on the set now, since he answered all of my existing questions prior to the set.
I figure 40 min. on technique and 20 on some rolling, which is more important to me since I can get a good feel on how and when he applies certain things and to see his timing. You can watch a technique a lot of times but feeling it changes the way you can understand it. So, that's my main goal to watch how and where he sets up certain things.
