Gegard Mousasi Returns To Training Following Recovery From Knee Surgery

UFC light heavyweight Gegard Mousasi (34-3-2) has returned to training following his recovery from knee surgery carried out in April earlier this year and is currently seeking his next opponent inside the octagon.

Mousasi, a talented striker who has held major titles in Cage Warriors, Strikeforce and DREAM, made his UFC debut on April 6th, 2013, where he defeated Swedish native Ilir Latifi (7-3 (1nc)) via unanimous decision. Mousasi had originally been scheduled to take on Alexander Gustafsson (15-1) at the event, however “The Mauler” suffered a cut during training just days before the event, leading to the late change of opponents.

After the bout it was revealed that Mousasi had also suffered an injury in training leading up to the fight, which was much more serious than most could have anticipated, with it being later confirmed that the twenty-eight year old had torn his ACL, the same injury he had suffered around a year earlier.

While it was hard to put a time-frame on Gegard’s return, with early reports suggesting he could be out of training until early 2014, it would appear that he is ahead of schedule after confirming via Twitter that his knee is “much better” and that he will “begin training for his next fight”.

Who his next fight may be against however is still unknown at this point, with Gegard also adding that no opponent has currently been offered to him. While it’s likely after a lengthy spell out Gegard will return to the light heavyweight division, where he is currently #8 in the UFC’s official rankings, he has also suggested in the past that he is considering dropping down to 185.

Voted Up. Hate the fact that he is tearing his ACL every year. Would love to see him make a healthy run for the 185lb title. Maybe give him a Belcher/Okami type fight for a warm-up to test his knee.
